This book is useful only after you've learned to program sounds by ear

There are way too many books on the market purporting to teach sound design/synth programming. This book is useful only after you've learned to program sounds by ear, at which point it is informative and well organized. However, it will not teach you make sounds deliberately, with purpose. For that I recommend the software tutorial unfortunately titled Syntorial. If that's not an option a distant second place is Welsh's Synthesizer Cookbook.

Live Life and Make a Noise

Refining Sound

Now retired I've just taken up an interest in synthesizer music and needed a book to help with the basic concepts of sound creation and use. I hit the nail on the head with this one! Brian takes you through the very basics of natural sound and electrically generated sound explaining how different sounds can interact in various ways or just plain cancel each other out. There are also explanations of the various pieces of hardware in analogue and software synthesizers. In fact I didn't know it but there are whole families of different types of synthesizer technologies. There are a couple of down-loads associated with this book so be careful to follow instructions closely. There is Maxitime 6.1, Crystal Soft Synth, and some chapter files relating to the book from University of Oxford site (passwords are in the book) to download. One thing that I missed was to download a “host” otherwise things won't work (so I downloaded Savihost suggested on the Camel Audio site, who by the way, have a very good freebie synth called Alchemy). There is a sound generating programme called Maxitime 6.1 that relates to the subject matter of the chapters in, “Refining Sound”. It is a must have to get this working because there is like audio laboratory examples from University of Oxford that you will need to hear and play with in Maxitime 6.1. You are also lead to a fantastic software synth called, “Crystal Soft Synth” at a site called Greenoak.com. Once again make sure that you get all the bits and pieces. The manual (PDF)on the Greenoak site is also very useful for understanding the Crystal Synth and also gives definition to some of the acronyms used in synthesizer music and technology. There is also a book called simply, “Synthesizer” by one Mark Vaill and I hope to get this at Amazon when it is released. Also a handy thing to have is a midi keyboard so as to be able to properly use the software synths but make sure that you have the right “driver” for your operating system. I bought a Roland midi keyboard for windows 8. My machine has Windows 8.1 and guess what, the enclosed software didn't work and I had to go to the Roland site for a Win8.1 Driver. I've bought a Casio XW-P1 synthesizer and am having a great time with it and thanks to Brian Shepard understanding the noises that I'm making.

If you are new to synthesizer music or sound creation I'd recommend this book to you.

Dr. Fereidoon Sioshansi is President of Menlo Energy Economics, a consulting firm based in San Francisco with over 35 years of experience in the electric power sectore working in analysis of energy markets, specializing in the policy, regulatory, technical and environmental aspects of the electric power sector in the US and internationally. His research and professional interests are concentrated in demand and price forecasting, electricity market design, competitive pricing & bidding, integrated resource planning, energy conservation and energy efficiency, economics of global climate change, sustainability, energy security, renewable energy technologies, and comparative performance of competitive electricity markets. Dr. Sioshansi advises major utility clients and government policy makers domestically and internationally on electricity market reform, restructuring and privatization of the electric power sector. He has published numerous reports, books, book chapters and papers in peer-reviewed journals on a wide range of subjects. His professional background includes working at Southern California Edison Co. (SCE), Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), NERA, and Global Energy Decisions. He is the editor and publisher of EEnergy Informer, a monthly newsletter with international circulation. He is on the Editorial Advisory Board of The Electricity Journal where he is regularly featured in the “Electricity Currents” section. Shahrokh M. Saudagaran Shahrokh Saudagaran PhD, is the Gary E. and James A. Milgard Endowed Dean at the University of Washington Tacomas Milgard School of Business. He is Secretary General of the Asian Academic Accounting Association and Past-President of the American Accounting Associations International Accounting Section. In 2002, the Japanese Association of International Accounting Studies awarded him a lifetime honorary membership in recognition of his contributions to international accounting. In 2004, he received the American Accounting Associations Outstanding International Accounting Educator Award. His research on the impact of international accounting diversity on global listing decisions and on financial reporting in emerging capital markets, particularly those in the Asia-Pacific region, has been published in the top accounting, finance and international business journals. He has presented his research at conferences and university colloquia in over 30 countries. Saudagaran consults and teaches executive seminars in international accounting and finance for corporations in Asia, Europe, and the United States.

Definitely the book NHibernate was lacking

I have just finished this book and I'm glad I bought it. This is the NHibernate book I was looking for.

I decided to learn more about NH because I'm using it at my current job and I was tired of asking for help when something complex was needed. But although I was not a beginner, I was not an expert either so the official documentation never helped me much. This book though is an in-depth tutorial, a guide, that you can easily follow along from the beginning to the very end while understanding every piece of it.

Chatekar's writing is clear and straightforward. It's detailed enough to give you an understanding of the topic and summarized enough so you don't get tired. The first half of the book is more about teaching you the basics: there's a simple problem and the author slowly builds a solution that uses NHibernate. The examples are easy to follow and the chapters are divided so that NHibernate configuration, entities mapping and database querying/writing are all covered separately. The second half of the book advances into more complex topics such as project organization (software architecture), NHibernate usage on web projects, design patterns, dependency injection, performance (caching, lazy loading, future queries) and so on. Also, along the road the author gives a handful of valuable advice about best practices and common pitfalls/caveats so that in the end you are not just a person with a new complex skill and no idea of where to begin to apply it.

The only two things that prevented me from giving it 5 stars were the lack of a code revision and more explanation of entities mappings.
In the first half, the author goes into implementing a solution to the problem proposed. If you try to follow along, you won't be able to either compile or run the code as there are a lot of tweaks required. I've only managed to run it after changing NHibernate's configuration and checking the book source (which also didn't compile). The book webpage could at least contain some errata or guidance for that (I did submit some to Packt but it never got published).
Secondly, I still think that there could have been more discussion about mappings and relationships, which are the heart of NHibernate and the source of many Stack Overflow questions. Again, the documentation is not very helpful here. For instance, the author made all relationships bidirectional and never got much into unidirectional relationships. Why one-to-one relationships cannot be unidirectional? What about mapping an FK Id into its own property to avoid loading an associated entity and mimic ISession.Load() behavior? What about nested relationships with relationships between children? Those are a few questions that remained after reading (and which of course I'll be exploring myself) but could have been clarified in the first chapters.

Anyway, despite the above critics the book is definitely worth it and will help anyone to overcome the initial learning curve of NHibernate. It's not meant to cover all the features but rather just kick start the reader -- which it has successfully accomplished.
