Nancy R. Hiller is a cabinetmaker who has published in numerous period design and woodworking magazines, including American Bungalow, Old House Interiors, and Fine Woodworking. Since 1995, Hiller has operated and been principal designer at NR Hiller Design, Inc. She lives in Bloomington, Indiana.

Just couldn't enjoy this writer.

I ordered this book in hopes of acquiring more information on Seller's Hoosier cabinets. While this book is informative I just couldn't get into Ms. Hiller's style of writing. I finally just looked up the pages that referred to the Seller's cabinet and read those and looked at the photos. It does offer lots of insight into the lives of families at the time of the Hoosier heyday, it was not what I was looking for as far as brand information. It is a nicely presented hardback book but with few color photos.

Life Changing Book

The philosopher Baruch Spinoza once said "to understand is to be free". This book does an phenomenal job at understanding the causes of social anxiety and presenting strategies to counteract these causes. The book states that social anxiety(shyness too) is a natural instinct based on nature and nurture, and everyone suffers from it to a certain degree(or susceptible to it). and we can overcome it by understanding it and using cognitive behavioral techniques to ultimately cancel out our socially awkward behavior.

part 1 of the book is called "understanding social anxiety", in it defines social anxiety and how it works in terms of our assumptions and beliefs.

part 2 of the book lays out several proven cognitive strategies. these strategies really do work, to me it was like dumping a base into an acid.

part 3 is sort of a "bonus" chapter to help you be more assertive, on bullying , and relaxation.

This is the best book i have EVER read on the subject. The author truly understands where social anxiety comes from and knows how painful it can be. And the best part, the author knows what to do about it. and it really DOES work.

Social Anxiety can be a VERY painful experience, we can miss out on friendships and intimate relationships, become lonely, feel unwanted and different, feel like there is something really wrong with us etc. (you are not alone)

this book can help you change all of that, and help you live your life to the fullest. You CAN live a socially rich life. You CAN live a rich romantic life. You CAN live a life that fully and harmoniously expresses who you are to the world.

i wish you the best in your journey on overcoming your barriers to harmonious human relations.

the price for the book is a bargain for a new rich life. i highly recommend it.

As has already been alluded to in previous reviews, the author gets it. She understands the problem completely and how we keep it going. She provides a simple yet effective strategy for change: 1)change how you think using a thought record 2)do things differently and most important think about what actually happened and how it differs from your catastrophic expectations 3)stop being self-conscious and learn to focus externally instead of on yourself 4)test and learn to change your limiting beliefs by collecting new information that disputes those beliefs. It's that simple and as effective.

This book is exactly what I needed!!! Only regret: that I didn't find it sooner

This book was exactly what I needed. It feels like I have been under this dark cloud forever and now the cloud is slowly starting to dissipate and I'm starting to feel the warmth of the sun. It makes me want to cry and laugh at the same time knowing that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. In fact I have not been able to stop smiling for the last 2 days. I don't know if I am socially phobic, but darn near! Never been diagnosed or anything, but all my life I have struggled with extreme shyness. It is so painful. But as I read through the book it gives me so many NEW ideas. And as someone who thinks a lot, I've thought this dilemma over and over and read about it, this book is so enlightening! Articles and things I've read in the past say, "don't focus on yourself so much, but focus on the other person," or "Just be positive." Others have made comments, "Just lighten up, you take everything too seriously," "Just toughen up," "Just this...Just that." The articles I read don't explain HOW, and these well-meaning people actually make you feel worse about yourself because they make it seem like "What's the big deal?" Though I've always been somewhat shy, when I was younger, I used to be pretty social. As I got older is when the social anxiety really started to kick in. I've always wondered what's wrong with me? I have tried soooo many different things to make myself "better," feeling that there is something inherently wrong with me. As I am reading this, I am just wishing I could've read this 10 yrs ago, it would have saved me so much pain and doing the wrong things to alleviate the pain, although I know this book is not near that old, still though I feel that all that anxiety is kind of melting away. I'm not even done with the book, but it's already helped me ALOT! What I've realized in reading this is that I actually am a naturally fairly Extroverted person. Though that label "Shy" was always slapped on me, I naturally want to be around people. And so that is a huge realization! The author has so much understanding and the writing is factual and to the point, no more, no less. But written in such a way that helps you understand your problem and gives you the steps to reason with yourself. About everything else I am a very rational person, and know that my thoughts about social situations are irrational, but somehow, I just couldn't change them. This book has you do mini-experiments to test your existing beliefs, and helps you get to the root of your reasoning. Absolutely wonderful. I'm fairly certain that my confidence will come back quickly, as it already has started. Buy this book if you are really struggling with social anxiety/shyness, you will be so glad you did.

Ideas and products and messages and behaviors spread just like viruses do." Although anyone familiar with the theory of memetics will recognize this concept, Gladwell's The Tipping Point has quite a few interesting twists on the subject.

For example, Paul Revere was able to galvanize the forces of resistance so effectively in part because he was what Gladwell calls a "Connector": he knew just about everybody, particularly the revolutionary leaders in each of the towns that he rode through. But Revere "wasn't just the man with the biggest Rolodex in colonial Boston," he was also a "Maven" who gathered extensive information about the British. He knew what was going on and he knew exactly whom to tell. The premise of this facile piece of pop sociology has built-in appeal: little changes can have big effects; when small numbers of people start behaving differently, that behavior can ripple outward until a critical mass or "tipping point" is reached, changing the world. Gladwell's thesis that ideas, products, messages and behaviors "spread just like viruses do" remains a metaphor as he follows the growth of "word-of-mouth epidemics" triggered with the help of three pivotal types. These are Connectors, sociable personalities who bring people together; Mavens, who like to pass along knowledge; and Salesmen, adept at persuading the unenlightened. (Paul Revere, for example, was a Maven and a Connector). Gladwell's applications of his "tipping point" concept to current phenomena--such as the drop in violent crime in New York, the rebirth of Hush Puppies suede shoes as a suburban mall favorite, teenage suicide patterns and the efficiency of small work units--may arouse controversy. For example, many parents may be alarmed at his advice on drugs: since teenagers' experimentation with drugs, including cocaine, seldom leads to hardcore use, he contends, "We have to stop fighting this kind of experimentation. We have to accept it and even embrace it." While it offers a smorgasbord of intriguing snippets summarizing research on topics such as conversational patterns, infants' crib talk, judging other people's character, cheating habits in schoolchildren, memory sharing among families or couples, and the dehumanizing effects of prisons, this volume betrays its roots as a series of articles for the New Yorker, where Gladwell is a staff writer: his trendy material feels bloated and insubstantial in book form. This genial book by New Yorker contributor Gladwell considers the elements needed to make a particular idea take hold. The "tipping point" (not a new phrase) occurs when something that began small (e.g., a few funky kids in New York's East Village wearing Hush Puppies) turns into something very large indeed (millions of Hush Puppies are sold). It depends on three rules: the Law of the Few, the Stickiness Factor, and the Power of Context. Episodes subjected to this paradigm here include Paul Revere's ride, the creation of the children's TV program Sesame Street, and the influence of subway shooter Bernie Goetz. The book has something of a pieced-together feel (reflecting, perhaps, the author's experience writing shorter pieces) and is definitely not the stuff of deep sociological thought. It is, however, an entertaining read that promises to be well publicized. Recommended for public libraries.

GAME CHANGER FOR ANY ONE IN A STARTUP

This book has a very interesting method of teaching using multiple case studies to give examples of the effectiveness, the uniqueness, and the power of these natural skills that together create an epidemic.
“It takes the smallest change to shatter epidemics equilibrium” sets the tone for the book in my opinion. Letting you grasp the concept that it’s the subtle things that create a monumental compounding effect in epidemics. The book pulls you into the short stories broken down to explain how the smallest change can happen in any of the 3 agents.
Law of the Few- it’s not masses of agitating agents that cause an epidemic, but just a few small “insignificant” changes.
Stickiness Factor- delivering a message in such a way that a person cannot remove it from their mind.
Power of Context- the sensitivity we have to our surroundings and situations that make us react in a certain manner.
He also breaks down how there are 3 main people that 3 types of people that are critical to social epidemics.
Connectors- These people who have an uncanny ability to make friends everywhere they go. Nothing makes them happier than building and keeping relationships with people. These people simply make the length of seemingly impossible connections far shorter then you can fathom.
Marvans- These are people that live for the moment to share something with you. To somehow provide you with money saving or life changing recommendations. They have a wealth of knowledge in consumer goods and services and just want to help get the best deal and or experience. These people drive word of mouth advertising.
Salesman- This is what I am. These are people that have the ability to persuade someone from the point of not interested to so excited they are telling their friends. Not because they are conniving or taking advantage of people but because they have a passion for what they are offering or telling you about. They wake up excited about the ability to help another person because that’s what their feeling of success is wrapped around. “What separates a great salesman from the average one is the number of answers they have to the objections commonly raised by potential clients.”

Probably One of Gladwell's Top Books,
Again, anything Gladwell writes is awesome. Having read all of his books, I think I'd rate "The Tipping Point" his second best next to "Outliers." His chapter about Connectors, Mavens, and Salesmen, says it all. Using Paul Revere as the ultimate member of this triple go-getting group is a great way to look at how the American Revolution succeeded. The "Magic Number of 150," its connections to the best-selling "Ya-Ya Sisterhood," and the initial success of Methodism with John Wesley's religious societies, rings very true. Again, read everything Gladwell writes and you will not be disappointed.

Unreadable

I've heard so much about this book, and this author, that I finally decided to give Tipping Point a try. It was unreadable; I barely made it past the introduction. Mr Gladwell draws some rather dubious conclusions from a set of broad generalizations. I was expecting an intelligent, insightful new way of looking at the world (a la any of Neal Stephenson's books; Cryptonomicon, for example), but got turned off by Mr Gladwell's ability to posit spurious correlations as legitimate ones. For example, in his early analysis of why crime rates in NYC dropped so precipitously in one year, Mr Gladwell uses such scientifically accurate phrases as "The small number of people;" "the new social forces;" "had some impact;" "that behavior somehow spread;" "somehow a large number of people...got 'infected'" He completely ignores the fact that a drop in crime statistics has little bearing on a drop in actual crime; how crimes are reported--and how they are recorded--is completely dependent on whether or not it's an election year.
This was simply too silly to continue reading, so I stopped.

Probably the only book you really need

Before I picked up this simple little Tome, I knew absolutely nothing about bonsai. I was studying eastern cultures and thought to myself, "Hey, I'm bored. I'll bet that this could be an interesting side diversion." I did a quick search on Amazon, and decided this book looked the most concise. It is very reasonably priced, who can't spare a meager $5 to decide if a new activity interests you? The book is very clear and has many helpful full color pictures. I believe that all topics essential to Bonsai are covered: potting, trimming, shaping, wiring, feeding, watering. It even explains the basics of more advanced bonsai techniques: growing the roots onto rock, intricate hanging patterns. A complete list of equipment if provided for the `real' bonsai gardener, but I made due with tools that I had lying around the house. After 15 minutes with the book, you've probably absorbed the majority of the information, and you can get started. I think the total cost to get me started was something like: $5 Book, $4 Juniper, $3 Pot. So I'm out $12.00 and a few hours of time before I decide if I enjoy this hobby or not. My cheap little bonsai is six months old now, and it looks just as nice as any picture I can find in the book. So unless you are planning on making bonsai your life's work, 101 Essential Tips is probably the only book you will ever need.

a beginners point of view

I am just starting out in this hobby. I went to the bookstore and looked at many books before picking this one out. Most were priced at twenty dollars or more and I just didn't want to spend that much for something I was just getting into. I checked out several books from the library and read them, including another larger book by the same author. After reading them, I looked through this one and felt that most of the really important info in the larger books was in this one as well with less words and pictures. I am really happy with this book. The photos are clear and informative, and the information is just what I need to get started. Sometimes when starting out, it is better not to get too bogged down in details or you will never dive in. I think this book is just the thing to get a beginner started without making the whole bonsai thing seem out of reach and demanding. Eventually, I can see I will want a guide with more info on individual plants and their care, but this will get me started, and at a great price.

If you like Bonsai, or received one as a gift, this is the book to get. Filled with 101 (literally) facts and tips, it is concise, streamlined and offers excellent pictures.
All critical areas are covered in the book: potting, trimming, shaping, wiring, feeding, watering (the most important perhaps!). If you want to take a crack at an advanced level of Bonsai care, it even guides and discusses growing the roots onto rock, and hanging patterns. There's also a few great tips that clears up the confusion about what sort of tools you *really* need.
This is a MUST to add to your Bonsai book collection.

About the Author

DOUGLAS C. MONTGOMERY, PhD, is Regents Professor of Industrial Engineering and Statistics at Arizona State University. Dr. Montgomery is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, the American Society for Quality, the Royal Statistical Society, and the Institute of Industrial Engineers and has more than thirty years of academic and consulting experience. He has devoted his research to engineering statistics, specifically the design and analysis of experiments, statistical methods for process monitoring and optimization, and the analysis of time-oriented data. Dr. Montgomery is the coauthor of Generalized Linear Models: With Applications in Engineering and the Sciences, Second Edition and Introduction to Time Series Analysis and Forecasting, both published by Wiley.

ELIZABETH A. PECK, PhD, is Logistics Modeling Specialist at the Coca-Cola Company in Atlanta, Georgia.

G. GEOFFREY VINING, PhD, is Professor in the Department of Statistics at Virginia Polytechnic and State University. He has published extensively in his areas of research interest, which include experimental design and analysis for quality improvement, response surface methodology, and statistical process control. A Fellow of the American Statistical Association and the American Society for Quality, Dr. Vining is the coauthor of Generalized Linear Models: With Applications in Engineering and the Sciences, Second Edition (Wiley).

Great descriptions and love the code samples!

This book is required for my regression course. I love it so far! The concepts are described well and I like that it has example SAS and R code throughout. I've only just started using the text, so I can update when I've read more than the first 2 chapters.

Good, but could be better

Just started a course using this book. I have 30 years in R&D and wanted to increase my knowledge. On the one hand the book is pretty good at showing the theory but to me the text could be a little clearer. Beyond that the thing it most needs are more real world, worked out case studies. It's one thing to show an example of take this data, do that thing to it and voila, vs telling me why I should take that data, why I should do that thing instead of some other thing, and interpret what it means. The book too quickly jumps into higher level concerns before establishing a good grounding in fundamentals. In that respect it has much in common with other stats books I've used.

diagrams too small

The book is great but the diagrams are too small to be read. Some hands I can't tell what the writer is trying to teach because the table icon is too small to read the cards. I have to rely on reading the text to understand what the writer is saying because of what I wrote earlier. I only gave it 3 stars because of this and because the book is expensive. I just might return it.

If you play sngs regularly and are happy with your pre-flop decisions, you'll be glad of these books which tackle the various post-flop scenarios in a thorough, well thought-out style. Ben is a consistent winner at low-stakes sngs on pokerstars so his approach is worth studying. If you play these games - or want to - I can't think of a better, more cost effective way of improving your game. Fantastic value.

About the Author
W. Timothy Coombs, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Nicholson School of Communication at the University of Central Florida. He is the 2002 recipient of the Jackson, Jackson & Wagner Behavioral Science Prize from the Public Relations Society of American for his crisis research. He is author of the award-winning Ongoing Crisis Communication (1999), Today’s Public Relations (with Robert Heath, 2006), and Code Red in the Boardroom: Crisis Management as Organizational DNA (2006).

Sherry J. Holladay, Ph.D., is Professor at the Nicholson School of Communication at the University of Central Florida, Orlando. Dr. Holladay's research interests include corporate social responsibility, crisis communication, activism, and reputation management. Her work has been widely published in journals.
Together, Timothy Coombs and Sherry Holladay are authors of the award winning books It’s Not Just PR: Public Relations in Society (2007, Wiley-Blackwell), PR Strategy and Application: Managing Influence (2010, Wiley-Blackwell) and co-editors of The Handbook of Crisis Communication (2010, Wiley-Blackwell).
