Picture Coloring is Off...

Many of the pictures show up in pink and green rather than the correct colors. Seeing as how this book has quite a few pictures, I find this really annoying (the maps are okay though, it's just the actual images that are weird). I would expect better from an ebook. The book itself is also poorly written, with many sentences repeated almost word for word multiple times throughout a single chapter.

About the Author
James M. Henslin, who was born in Minnesota, graduated from high school and junior college in California and from college in Indiana. Awarded scholarships, he earned his Master’s and doctorate degrees in sociology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. After this, he was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the National Institute of Mental Health, and spent a year studying how people adjust to the suicide of a family member. His primary interests in sociology are the sociology of everyday life, deviance, and international relations. Among his numerous books is Down-to-Earth Sociology: Introductory Readings (Free Press), now in its twelfth edition. This book of readings reflects some of these sociological interests. He has also published widely in sociology journals, including Social Problems and American Journal of Sociology.

While a graduate student, Jim Henslin taught at the University of Missouri at St. Louis. After completing his doctorate, he joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, where he is Professor Emeritus of Sociology. He says, “I’ve always found the introductory course enjoyable to teach. I love to see students’ faces light up when they first glimpse the sociological perspective and begin to see how society has become an essential part of how they view the world.”

Henslin enjoys reading and fishing. His two favorite activities are writing and traveling. He especially enjoys visiting and living in other cultures, for this brings him face to face with behaviors and ways of thinking that he cannot take for granted, experiences that “make sociological principles come alive.”

Renting this book for my upcoming semester at College. This book is in great condition, granted I thought it was going to be a little poor only because I am only renting it. I love his writing style

The author writes this book as if he was sitting in front of you and you both were having a conversation over coffee. I love his writing style, his ways of simplifying his teachings. The stories he tells at the beginning of each chapter have me reading in advance. If you are planing to take into to sociology find a professor who uses this book!

Life and labor in the South from the end of World War II to the Freedom Summer of 1964 have often been viewed as tranquil. However, Daniel, a curator at the National Museum of American History, argues that forces were emerging from the cultural and economic landscape that changed Southern life forever. The decline of labor-intensive agriculture; working-class cultural achievements, especially in stockcar racing and rock'n'roll; and, above all, the Civil Rights Movement challenged the ruling white elite and the middle class during the 1950s. Daniel chronicles the changes, such as agricultural technology and resistance to civil rights, that transformed the South in the period following World War II. He captures the unique southern culture that developed from poverty, religious fundamentalism, and racial obsessions and manifested itself in spiritual music, fast cars, and rebellious spirits. Daniel details the fight against integration following the Brown v. Board of Education ruling and the growth of the Ku Klux Klan among lower-class whites. He examines the music business in the South, the appeal of black music and culture to rebellious white youth, the evolution of southern music into rock 'n' roll, and the eventual taming of its spontaneity as it went mainstream. Daniel portrays a similar phenomenon in stock car racing, an amusement that has its roots in bootleggers running from revenuers. Excellent appraisal of the Southern paradox

The 1950's South was both a time and a place of contradictions. On the one hand, there was a cultural revolution going on that fused both white and black musical tastes into one revolutionary music genre (rock 'n' roll) and a political revolution that went on (integration) which made the cultural achievements seem to pale in comparison. In essence, the South of the 1950's was a confusing maelstrom of contradictory policies and failed opportunities for peaceful change.
So argues Pete Daniel in his book "Lost Revolutions: The South in the 1950's". Daniel's thesis is that the South offered ripe opportunities for change during the immediate post-World War II era but these opportunities were overlooked by the fact that warring factions between African-Americans and whites prevented to make important cultural revolutions make a difference in the political spectrum. These important cultural revolutions consisted of: the importance of rhythm and blues in forging feelings of appreciation between blacks and white country and western singers, the rise of NASCAR as a unifying factor among lower-class whites to challeng the hegemony of the white middle and upper-classes, and, finally, the rebeliousness exhibited by both white and black youth to forge a new consensus for political change. Daniel's book does an excellent job of explaining both why there were contradictions in Southern society and how these contradictions contributed to a painfully fought battle for integration and equal rights. This is a battle which is still being fought today but more on a state's rights and regionalistic front than a racial front.
Daniel's book is a true lesson in primary source research and his endnotes clearly demonstrate this. Interviews, 4 pages of manuscript collection sources, and numerous prominent secondary sources fully back up a thought-provoking thesis. This book is a welcome addition to southern historiography.

From Augustus to Romulus Augustulus, this colorful album astutely surveys 500 years of contesting and holding the imperial purple. Scarre directs the story along two main routes: the surviving annals of classical historians like Tacitus, Suetonius, or Eusebius, and photographic features of the outstanding buildings put up by the emperors, such as Vespasian's Colosseum. The result is a text winding around many interesting sidebars, maps, and busts of emperors, rendering an effect attractive both to those who know the Roman saga by heart and to those whose ideas of it came from the I, Claudius TV series. The temptation to classify the rulers as good or bad, to which the TV show succumbed, is one Scarre successfully resists by pointing out the senatorial or Christian biases of the contemporary historians. In any event, the job of First Citizen, whether capably or incompetently discharged, came with a high mortality rate, which Scarre delineates, as numerous ignominious endings mark civil wars and dynastic successions. Excellant, detailed and thorough coverage of all the Roman emperors.

My review title pretty much says it all. Especially interesting was the family information as well as the timelines, maps and illustrations (all in a nutshell). I had read several full-lenth historical biographies trying to trace the family connections. Marriages were arranged often for political or inheritance purposes and there was a lot of inbreeding of a small social class. Notable was Tiberius (stepson of Augustus) who was ordered to divorce his dearly loved first wife to marry Augustus' daughter (something he never really got over). Also shorter male lifespans resulted in multiple remarriages further complicating things. This book is amazingly concise AND complete for it's size and also manages to include sketches of other prominant people of the day as well as each emperor's most famous construction projects.

Wonderful Explanation of Roman Emperors!

I read a lot of history, and whenever Roman emperors were mentioned, my knowledge felt a little lacking. After carefully reading this book and taking notes, I feel like I have a whole new weapon in my arsenal. Every emperor is given a decent explanation, and it did an excellent job of rounding out my knowledge and refreshing my memory. I wish Scarre would cover the whole history of the empire that succinctly.

Very thorough and surprisingly readable.

This book gives a very thorough, surprisingly readable and commendably balanced look at the succession of Roman emperors from Augustus through Romulus Augustulus. The subject may be considered rather dry for most readers, and I won't claim that someone not inherently interested in the subject matter could find themselves captivated by this book, but for a reader who has voluntarily chosen to read up on the subject, this book does a very good job of keeping the information coming at a pace that is slow enough to be comprehensible but fast enough to avoid tedium.

It is also true that the author does a fine job of identifying bias in the reports of the most common sources of this history, so that this book provides a history that acknowledges the reports of both pagan and Christian historians, but does not blindly accept what either group has to say about emperors who they either demonize or deify. This is a very worthwhile practice, and so overall the book is a very helpful primer for a novice on the subject.

Baron's is one of the best test prep publishers

Baron's is one of the best test prep publishers, and SAT is no exception. From the tear out vocabulary cards to hints explained, multiple methodologies are presented for efficient study. I have found no typographical nor question-answer errors in my tutoring of SAT students. I highly recommend this book over any of the others out there.

Accurate yet not accurate.

I purchased this book at Barnes and Nobles but I figured I can still write a review. First thing I'd like to point out is the difficulty of the SATS in this book compared to that of the blue book and Princeton Review. The SATS are noticeably more difficult especially the reading comprehension and the vocabulary. It perfectly prepares you for the exam by giving more complex passages than you'll find on a real SAT making it a breeze for the actual exam. The vocabulary and grammar in this book is very advance so you're in for a treat. One thing I don't like about Barron's SAT exams is the fact that the math and reading (though complex) is completely far fetched from the actual SAT. Very few of the math questions in my opinion are similar to the math portion on the SAT and the reading passages DO NOT chronological order in some of their test. For example you'll have a question on a reading passage (#5) saying "in line 22 what does the word "secure" most nearly mean" and then question #6 would jump back to line 14. I'm not sure if I'm wrong but that doesn't happen on an actual SAT so I just wanted to point that out. Overall it's an excellent book besides those two minors problems.
