Amazing Book

I was beyond excited to read this book for the Sunday Street Team. I think more people should tell darker stories, because they exist in our world. This was an amazing book. The writing was heartbreakingly beautiful. I received a copy from Netgalley to review, and ended up giving this book 5 out of 5 stars.

As soon as I picked up this book, I pretty much didn’t want to put it down…except to take some breaks when my heart felt like it had cracked open in my chest. The book wasn’t all darkness, but it definitely wasn’t a happy book. Which is fine with me, because life isn’t sunshine and daisies 24/7. Charlie’s story, and even a lot of the secondary characters stories, will resonate with a lot of people.

I absolutely loved Charlie’s character. She seemed so real. My heart ached for her, and the people surrounding her, that have to deal with inner and outer demons. I really liked a lot of the female characters in this book, but barely any of the male characters–except a couple. A lot of the guys were jackasses. Charlie goes through so much in this book, and by the end, I’m glad she has people she can turn to, people she can rely on.

Honestly, I think everyone should read this book. It reminds you that sometimes bad things–overwhelming things–happen. But with some supportive friends, you can embrace life to its fullest. One of my favorite things about this book is that you can feel the raw pain and emotion. Kathleen wasn’t scared to show the downs of life, to show how the tornado building inside you can lash out at any moment.

I made notes of some gorgeous lines while reading: “We all have our Kiefer stages, when we want to destroy ourselves in order to create. To see if that’s beautiful, too.” and “I say the wrong thing, if I can bring myself to say anything at all. I’ve always felt like an intrusion, a giant blob of wrong.” and “I’m so unwhole. I don’t know where all the pieces of me are, how to fit them together, how to make them stick. Or if I even can.”

Final note: An amazing book. It’s definitely dark, but it has an optimistic ending. I’m so glad I read this book. As soon as I finished reading, I bought myself a copy for my personal collection. I’d highly recommend this one.

FIVE STARS! Beautiful. Broken. Believable.

This is one of those books you just can't put down (though I did a few times because all that other stuff--like parenting--got in the way). The author's style of writing was so perfect for this story, almost disjointed in parts, giving us little glimpses, bits and pieces of the main character and her history. GIRL IN PIECES isn't about romance, by any means, but must add that I truly loved the tragic love story happening as a secondary plot line.

I don't know how to sum up this book in a quick and easy way, so I will leave you with this: GIRL IN PIECES is all at once tragic and hopeful, heartbreaking and revitalizing, depressing and uplifting. It combines all of these emotions and more into one HELL of a story and one HELL of a main character. Charlie is the girl next door. She's the little girl you keep tucked deep down inside. She's the girl who sits next to you in class, quiet and invisible, but wanting so much to be loved, to find her voice and reach out. She's the woman you know down the street. Her secrets may not be the same as yours, but you know her, and you instantly connect with her.

Our scars may not all be the same, many of them not even visible, but we all have them, and we will always be united in that, no matter our differences.

Charlie's story is inspiring, as is Kathleen Glasgow. I can't wait to read more of her work.

Powerful, heartbreaking and empowering

I found ‘Girl in Pieces’ such a powerful, eye-opening story and I’m so glad that Kathleen Glasgow decided to write it. I think it’s so important for us to hear more of these kinds of voices, to become more aware and develop a greater understanding of mental illness. Beautifully written, with real, gritty characters, ‘Girl in Pieces’ tells the story of main protagonist Charlotte Davis. Charlotte or Charlie is a young girl whose life seems to be breaking apart. As each heartbreaking, terrible thing happens to her, she seems to get a little bit smaller and feel a little bit more insignificant. It seems inevitable that nothing will change for her, but through her art and the kindness of friends Charlie is able to start putting herself back together.

Excellent training book

This book was recommended to me by my drum teacher. There are excellent drills or patterns in this book which are great for beginners and expert players as well. My only complaint (as with nearly all music books) is that it should be spiral bound. Bound books (which are hard to keep open on music stands) should have no place in music libraries.

A must have for every working drummer! Some unusual drum styles presented. All drum grooves presented in clear, concise large print. Very useful for the versatile drummer working a variety of gigs-Neat Book! Very similar to "Drumset Grooves" written by Patrick Riley. I like Riley's book just a little bit better because of the format.

About the Author

is the Chief Technology Officer of Endeca, where he leads the research and development of Endeca's knowledge navigation products. Prior to working at Endeca, David designed and developed core components of Inktomi's Internet-scale search database and was a senior developer of Inktomi's web caching products. David earned a B.A.in Computer Science from the University of California at Berkeley.

was a member of Inktomi Corporation's founding engineering team, and served as Inktomi's Vice President of R&D where he co-developed Inktomi's search engine database, and led the development of Inktomi's web caching and streaming media technologies. Formerly, he was a scientist at Silicon Graphics and at Apple Computer's Advanced Technology Group. Brian Totty has received several awards for research and teaching excellence, and holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and a B.S. in Computer Science from M.I.T.

A must have book for serious web app pentesters

Although this book is very in-depth, long, and quite possibly a good cure for insomnia, any decent web app pentester would be remiss without having this great reference book in their nerd library. This book explained virtually everything I ever wanted to know about HTTP headers. It is extensive and is a technical guide, however, the author does do a good job of keeping the information light, entertaining, interesting, and informative as best as anyone could on a topic such as this. If anything, reciting the knowledge I obtained from this book (and I'm only 50% through it at the time of this review), makes my co-workers think I'm some super-nerd on the HTTP protocol. In my opinion, this is a Must Have book in your arsenal of references.

Comprehensive and well written

Who would have thought you could write a 600+ page book about HTTP? The official specification itself is less than 200 pages - what else is there to say? As it turns out, quite a bit. This book traces the history of HTTP from 0.9 to the current version (1.1) and talks about the proposed HTTP-NG extensions as well. Part 1 covers the basics of HTTP: what it actually does and is for. Part 2 talks about the components that make HTTP work: servers, proxies, caches, etc. Part 3 covers HTTP security, including authentication headers and a brief overview of HTTPS. I would have liked to have seen some coverage of SSO here - SAML is close enough to HTTP as to be on topic in a book section about HTTP authentication - but they stuck with what's "baked in" to HTTP. Part 4 was my favorite part: this is where they talk about encodings, chunking, compression, internationalization, etc. This is the stuff that will get you when you're trying to deal with HTTP at a low level, and they cover it in a lot of detail, but manage to keep it interesting. Part 5, on the other hand, seemed like sort of an afterthought, which was a shame, because there was a lot of potentially great material in there. This is where they cover web publishing (as it relates to HTTP). Unfortunately, there's not much information here that you can't get from official specifications - the 30 pages they devote to WebDAV, for example, are just a dry repetition of the mechanics of WebDAV with no discussion of how it's used, or what problems you might run into trying to get it running. The final chapter on logging was OK, but again, it seemed like they could have gone into a lot more depth on actually using log files to troubleshoot problems than just telling you what was in the Apache/Netscape/Squid/etc. log files.

Still, for such a long book, it's amazing that they kept their focus on HTTP so well - there's a lot of good advice and information in there. I'd recommend it to anybody who deals with the web at a technical level, from programmers to website administrators.

Overall good, but light on https / ssl

Overall this book really fits my reading style and I liked it. This book is for you if you like to-the-point books without repetition. There is a good reference in the back for http headers, http codes, mime types, etc. The author also has a hint of humor at places which I feel is necessary in technical books or I feel quite drowsy after a while.

That being said there is one area I felt could have used more explanation although perhaps I'm just not putting it all together correctly. The author takes time to go over https where he prefaces with security concepts such as: asymmetric encryption, symmetric encryption, certificates, etc. What I felt was very lacking was explanation precisely how SSL works. In fact if I recall the portion that actually talks about SSL is 1 or 2 paragraphs that fit on a page.

The only other thing I might say is feel free to skip sections you aren't interested in, for instance the book goes into detail about how servers interact with clients, how requests might be ran in parallel, etc. If you're just looking for straight up http, be mindful of the index and skip sections when applicable. That being said, overall a great book and worth getting. I personally still feel a little hazy on SSL though and which this was more concrete in my mind.
