Pope Joan: A Novel, by Donna Woolfolk Cross

"Pope Joan has all the elements one wants in a historical drama – love, sex, violence, duplicity, and long-buried secrets. Cross has written an engaging book."–Los Angeles Times Book Review

In this international bestseller, Donna Woolfolk Cross brings the Dark Ages to life in all their brutal splendor and shares the dramatic story of a woman whose strength of vision led her to defy the social restrictions of her day.

For a thousand years her existence has been denied. She is the legend that will not die –- Pope Joan, the ninth-century woman who disguised herself as a man and rose to become the only female ever to sit on the throne of St. Peter. Now in this riveting novel, Cross paints a sweeping portrait of an unforgettable heroine who struggles against restrictions her soul cannot accept.

Brilliant and talented, young Joan rebels against medieval social strictures forbidding women to learn. When her brother is brutally killed during a Viking attack, Joan takes up his cloak–and his identity–and enters the monastery of Fulda. As Brother John Anglicus, Joan distinguishes herself as a great scholar and healer. Eventually, she is drawn to Rome, where she becomes enmeshed in a dangerous web of love, passion, and politics. Triumphing over appalling odds, she finally attains the highest office in Christendom–wielding a power greater than any woman before or since. But such power always comes at a price . . .

"Brings the savage ninth century vividly to life in all its alien richness. An enthralling, scholarly historical novel."
--Rebecca Fraser, Author of The Brontës

Amazon.com Review
One of the most controversial women of history is brought to brilliant life in Donn Woolfolk Cross's tale of Pope Joan, a girl whose origins should have kept her in squalid domesticity. Instead, through her intelligence, indomitability and courage, she ascended to the throne of Rome as Pope John Anglicus.

The time is 814, the place is Ingelheim, a Frankland village. It is the harshest winter in living memory when Joan is born to an English father and a Saxon mother. Her father is a canon, filled with holy zeal and capable of unconscionable cruelty. His piety does not extend to his family members, especially the females. His wife, Gudrun, is a young beauty to whom he was attracted beyond his will--and he hates her for showing him his weakness. Gudrun teaches Joan about her gods, and is repeatedly punished for it by the canon. Joan grows to young womanhood with the combined knowledge of the warlike Saxon gods and the teachings of the Church as her heritage. Both realities inform her life forever.

When her brother John, not a scholarly type, is sent away to school, Joan, who was supposed to be the one sent to school, runs away and joins him in Dorstadt, at Villaris, the home of Gerold, who is central to Joan's story. She falls in love with Gerold and their lives interesect repeatedly even through her Papacy. She is looked upon by all who know that she is a woman as a "lusus naturae," a freak of nature. "She was... male in intellect, female in body, she fit in nowhere; it was as if she belonged to a third amorphous sex." Cross makes the case over and over again that the status of women in the Dark Ages was little better than cattle. They were judged inferior in every way, and necessary evils in the bargain.

After John is killed in a Viking attack, Joan sees her opportunity to escape the fate of all her gender. She cuts her hair, dons her dead brother's clothes and goes into the world as a young boy. Gerold is away from Villaris at the time of the attack and comes home to find his home in ruins, his family killed and Joan among the missing. After the attack, Joan goes to a Benedictine monastery, is accepted as a young man of great learning, and eventually makes her way to Rome.

The author is at pains to tell the reader in an Epilogue that she has written the story as fiction because it is impossible to document Joan's accesion to the Papacy. The Catholic Church has done everything possible to deny this embarrassment. Whether or not one believes in Joan as Pope, this is a compelling story, filled with all kinds of lore: the brutishness of the Dark Ages, Vatican intrigue, politics and favoritism and most of all, the place of women in the Church and in the world. --Valerie Ryan

From Publishers Weekly
Cross makes an excellent, entertaining case in her work of historical fiction that, in the Dark Ages, a woman sat on the papal throne for two years. Born in Ingelheim in A.D. 814 to a tyrannical English canon and the once-heathen Saxon he made his wife, Joan shows intelligence and persistence from an early age. One of her two older brothers teaches her to read and write, and her education is furthered by a Greek scholar who instructs her in languages and the classics. Her mother, however, sings her the songs of her pagan gods, creating a dichotomy within her daughter that will last throughout her life. The Greek scholar arranges for the continuation of her education at the palace school of the Lord Bishop of Dorstadt, where she meets the red-haired knight Gerold, who is to become the love of her life. After a savage attack by Norsemen destroys the village, Joan adopts the identity of her older brother, slain in the raid, and makes her way to Fulda, to become the learned scholar and healer Brother John Anglicus. After surviving the plague, Joan goes to Rome, where her wisdom and medical skills gain her entrance into papal circles. Lavishly plotted, the book brims with fairs, weddings and stupendous banquets, famine, plague and brutal battles. Joan is always central to the vivid action as she wars with the two sides of herself, "mind and heart, faith and doubt, will and desire." Ultimately, though she leads a man's life, Joan dies a woman's death, losing her life in childbirth. In this colorful, richly imagined novel, Cross ably inspires a suspension of disbelief, pulling off the improbable feat of writing a romance starring a pregnant pope.

From School Library Journal
YA-A woman pope? The author's notes document the possibility that there was one for a brief time in the ninth century. The Joan in this novel has all the qualities a woman would need to become pope: superior intelligence, imagination, daring, and the determination that her sex would not keep her illiterate and subservient, as were most women of the period. Joan is an apt pupil at the cathedral school, where she is allowed to study only because her brother cannot master Latin. A Viking raid on her wedding day gives Joan the opportunity to escape an unwanted marriage; she takes her dead brother's clothes, presents herself at a nearby monastery, and becomes Brother John Anglicus. Her skill in healing and her passion for learning attract attention, and she fears discovery. Still disguised as a monk, Joan takes the pilgrim's road to Rome, where her skills as a healer attract the attention of the Pope himself. YAs, especially girls, will follow the adventures of this amazing heroine with fascination, and at the same time will learn much about life in the Middle Ages, and about the history of this tumultuous period just after the death of Charlemagne.

Pope Joan as Revisionist Superwoman
By J Thomas
I really did want to like this book. The author is a good storyteller, does a wonderful job of evoking a real sense of the period (no shirking of historical research here), and the idea of a female pope is a fascinating one. One can imagine that spiritual women denied access to the church, or clever women denied access to learning, might indeed have sought to escape the confines of their gender.

But somewhere between Joan/John outarguing Greek philosophers, becoming a famous healer, inventing intinction, miraculously surviving beatings/viking raids/plague, inventing modern courtroom procedure (witnesses, questioning), establishing orphanages, saving peasants from floods, cleverly applying her knowledge of hydraulic engineering to save the Vatican from an invading Frankish army, saving the pope from [...], exposing ecclesiastical corruption, and thwarting a raging city fire, I found it harder and harder to keep suspending disbelief. This Pope Joan is a liberal, feminist, secular humanist, Dark Ages superhero rather than a living, breathing, believable woman of her time. The author takes such pains to eliminate anachronism in all other aspects of the novel: perhaps that is why John/Joan's highly anachronistic behavior & beliefs seem so grating in contrast.

John/Joan's enamorata Gerold is also a disappointment. There is no attempt at character development here. Think Ken to Joan's Barbie, Ned to Joan's Nancy Drew ... the tall, lusty, handsome, resourceful hero of any one of a thousand cheesy romance novels.

Finally, I was disappointed by the author's overreliance on deus ex machina (sp?). Far too often she relies on improbable plot twists, timely intercessions and amazing coincidences to move her plot forward. I don't want to spoil the plot for potential readers - but I will say that Joan always seems to be behind the right wall when there is a useful conversation to be overheard, Viking raids have never been more conveniently timed, and old friends/allies have a way of miraculously appearing just when they are most needed.

I guess I'm saying that while this is an entertaining book, it is certainly not a great book. Be prepared to enjoy it for the story & the history, but not necessarily for the literary merit.

Captivating and Engrossing
By Kelly Budd
Some have heard of the infamous Pope Joan, the woman who disguised herself as a man, and achieved the highest status of the time...The Pope, but many have not. Donna Woolfolk Cross has brought the legend of Pope Joan to life. The novel is written in a fictional sense, but weaves many of the little known facts into the tale. You decide for yourself...
Joan was considered a very abnormal woman who's desire to learn was ungodly and considered sinful. A woman's place was to be subserviant to men. The reader will experience the struggle and conflict that Joan experienced as she embarked on her journey of higher actualization. To say that Joan was immune from seeking and wanting love would be untrue. The reader will follow Joan as she reconciles her feeling for her one true love.
The characters have been created with amazing detail and are a very good representation of the time. One can create a visual image of the atire; the struggle to meet basic needs; and mostly the status and order that prevailed among the classes.
I highly recommend Pope Joan, both to the individual and to any book club. This novel was truly engrossing, it offers a different perspective than the traditional patriarical view of past times. Pope Joan will spark conversations, heighten your awareness, and remain in your memory for a very long time.

A Papal mystery
By A Customer
I just finished this book and loved it! I was alittle skeptical to continue when I first started it as I am easily upset about references to torture and medieval lifestyles. I am so glad that I continued reading. Unfortunately, the scenes of torture and representations of women as being lowlier than dogs was fact in this era (ninth century) and an important part of the story. They provided the basis for understanding what drove Joan to make the decision to live her life as a man. She was a woman filled with a passion for learning and exploring all that life had to offer the men of her time, but was forbidden for women to know. She was brave in the face of danger, had a keen and intelligent mind, and yet always exhibited an underlying femininity as she nurtured the sick, the poor and the children and when she spoke of her love, Gerold. She not only wanted to better her own life, but was committed to helping those around her as well.
I am not Catholic and was completely unaware of her so-called legend. It is still debated as to whether or not she existed; some believe that the Catholic Church has deliberately removed her from any records of the time to avoid having to deal with the embarrassment of her rise to be Pope (the author spends a short time at the end of the book presenting this debate). I, for one, want to believe she existed. She represents all that is good in people and proves that we can attain our goals if we truly believe in them.
Definitely, recommended reading!

Things Fall Apart, by Chinua Achebe

Things Fall Apart tells two intertwining stories, both centering on Okonkwo, a “strong man” of an Ibo village in Nigeria. The first, a powerful fable of the immemorial conflict between the individual and society, traces Okonkwo’s fall from grace with the tribal world. The second, as modern as the first is ancient, concerns the clash of cultures and the destruction of Okonkwo's world with the arrival of aggressive European missionaries. These perfectly harmonized twin dramas are informed by an awareness capable of encompassing at once the life of nature, human history, and the mysterious compulsions of the soul.

Amazon.com Review
One of Chinua Achebe's many achievements in his acclaimed first novel, Things Fall Apart, is his relentlessly unsentimental rendering of Nigerian tribal life before and after the coming of colonialism. First published in 1958, just two years before Nigeria declared independence from Great Britain, the book eschews the obvious temptation of depicting pre-colonial life as a kind of Eden. Instead, Achebe sketches a world in which violence, war, and suffering exist, but are balanced by a strong sense of tradition, ritual, and social coherence. His Ibo protagonist, Okonkwo, is a self-made man. The son of a charming ne'er-do-well, he has worked all his life to overcome his father's weakness and has arrived, finally, at great prosperity and even greater reputation among his fellows in the village of Umuofia. Okonkwo is a champion wrestler, a prosperous farmer, husband to three wives and father to several children. He is also a man who exhibits flaws well-known in Greek tragedy: Okonkwo ruled his household with a heavy hand. His wives, especially the youngest, lived in perpetual fear of his fiery temper, and so did his little children. Perhaps down in his heart Okonkwo was not a cruel man. But his whole life was dominated by fear, the fear of failure and of weakness. It was deeper and more intimate than the fear of evil and capricious gods and of magic, the fear of the forest, and of the forces of nature, malevolent, red in tooth and claw. Okonkwo's fear was greater than these. It was not external but lay deep within himself. It was the fear of himself, lest he should be found to resemble his father. And yet Achebe manages to make this cruel man deeply sympathetic. He is fond of his eldest daughter, and also of Ikemefuna, a young boy sent from another village as compensation for the wrongful death of a young woman from Umuofia. He even begins to feel pride in his eldest son, in whom he has too often seen his own father. Unfortunately, a series of tragic events tests the mettle of this strong man, and it is his fear of weakness that ultimately undoes him.

Achebe does not introduce the theme of colonialism until the last 50 pages or so. By then, Okonkwo has lost everything and been driven into exile. And yet, within the traditions of his culture, he still has hope of redemption. The arrival of missionaries in Umuofia, however, followed by representatives of the colonial government, completely disrupts Ibo culture, and in the chasm between old ways and new, Okonkwo is lost forever. Deceptively simple in its prose, Things Fall Apart packs a powerful punch as Achebe holds up the ruin of one proud man to stand for the destruction of an entire culture. --Alix Wilber

From Library Journal
Peter Frances James offers a superb narration of Nigerian novelist Achebe's deceptively simple 1959 masterpiece. In direct, almost fable-like prose, it depicts the rise and fall of Okonkwo, a Nigerian whose sense of manliness is more akin to that of his warrior ancestors than to that of his fellow clansmen who have converted to Christianity and are appeasing the British administrators who infiltrate their village. The tough, proud, hardworking Okonkwo is at once a quintessential old-order Nigerian and a universal character in whom sons of all races have identified the figure of their father. Achebe creates a many-sided picture of village life and a sympathetic hero. A good recording of this novel has been long overdue, and the unhurried grace and quiet dignity of James's narration make it essential for every collection.?Peter Josyph, New York

In this English professor's all-time top five
By S. Ward
One of the best books I've ever read, in my top five of all time, and I'm an English professor, so you know I've done some reading. I believe I read it in a matter of two or three hours the first time because I was desperate to know what was going to happen to Okonkwo and his kin with the invasion of European colonization. Do not be put off by what you may have heard about the violence and/or cruelty; there are a few parts where the content is a little rough, but the unflinching lack of sentimentalism - the matter-of-fact tone - makes the events tolerable. I teach a lot of folks who are older teens/early twenties, and honestly, I don't think this is a book that should be taught in high school or at the undergrad level because I think it actually helps to have some life behind you when you read it for the first time. If I knew in advance (which I never do) that I was going to have a class full of people over thirty, I would use it in a class without question. I would also say it's a must-read for men because of its powerful depictions of the conflicts between fathers, sons, and just male kinship relationships in general. Achebe also gives great insight into two strong powerful female characters, his second wife and one of his daughters, even though they have a minimal amount of page time.

A beautifully constructed song of life, tradition, and modernity
By Kenn Vance
This short novel has a distinct voice and lyrical style. This might be somewhat challenging but the messages and tones are clear, and the chapters are short, so that even flipping back to the beginning of a chapter, or to the glossary in the back, or looking up an Igbo word on your smartphone won't take you out of the flow of the story or make this book too daunting to read. The short chapter are constructed in a way to be part of the story - the way the story is told is part of the total message of the book. But whether you pick up on it subconsciously or through careful and thoughtful reading and analysis, Achebe is always pulling you in one direction so you won't get lost and the meaning is always clear.

I really appreciate how the book presents a variety of emotions and so-called "sins", such as anger, shame, pride, laziness, and even love without judgement or sentiment. The book is as much about the inner-turmoil of the main characters as the external turmoil of a scoiety bounded by tradition and harried by imperialism.

Falls Apart at the End
By Michael Haig
***SPOILER ALERT

The epigraph to _Things Fall Apart_ is a quotation from Yeats's famous poem, "The Second Coming". This is also the source of the novel's title. It is not clear how Yeats's authority applies to the novel. Perhaps it is a heavy irony: the West may prophesize the end of the Christian era, but among the Nigerian natives Christian religion merely devastates native beliefs. In this way Achebe repudiates Western spirituality wholly: faith may decline in the West, but it should never have got started in the first place in Nigeria.

Yet the ending of the novel is unsatisfying. Okonkwo's suicide seems out of character: as his friend, Obierika, explains to the white men, he has infringed the laws of his clan and is accursed. All through the novel Okonkwo is a proud man, a strong man, intensely conscious of his position among the clan. That he should so seriously violate himself socially and spiritually seems unlikely. Achebe builds him up against the emasculating influence of the church, but then he throws him away at the end, like so much carrion for Western crows to peck at. Perhaps we feel for him in his apparently utter despair, but Achebe has stressed his strength (not only is he a famous wrestler and warrior, he is also a self-made man), and it is more disappointing than moving to discover at the novel's end that all this is nothing. It is as though the Christianity deprecated in the novel somehow proves its superiority: not only does Okonkwo do what Judas Iscariot did, he is also cursed by his own spiritual beliefs.

Okonkwo is not much of a hero really. He routinely beats his family when they act contrary to his inclinations, he takes part in ritualistic murder. His regret for the passing away of the warrior code strikes one as a typical twentieth-century regret, like Eliot's "[i]f you came at night like a broken king" or Lawrence's disaffection with Sir Clifford: "'Worthy men are no more,' Okonkwo sighed as he remembered those days". Achebe mounts in effect a double-pronged attack: against the Christian invasion, and, by casting Okonkwo away, against the native religion. The reader is left at the end with nothing: neither with an effective critique of Christianity as propogated by the West, nor with an affirmation of native religion. It seems that the reader must make do with the violence that actually takes place, the District Commissioner, planning his book on the subject, having the last word.

_Things Fall Apart_ is quite well-written. It brings the African villagers vividly to life. But we are not privileged to see a final show-down between native belief and the invading Christianity, which might have given us more in the way of truth and enlightenment.

Pygmalion (Penguin Classics), by George Bernard Shaw

Shaw's brilliantly witty exposure of the British class system

Shaw wrote the part of Eliza Doolittle—'an east-end dona with an apron and three orange and red ostrich feathers'—for Mrs Patrick Campbell, with whom he had a passionate but unconsummated affair. From the outset the play was a sensational success, although Shaw, irritated by its popularity at the expense of his artistic intentions, dismissed it as a potboiler. The Pygmalion of legend falls in love with his perfect female statue and persuades Venus to bring her to life so that he can marry her. But Shaw radically reworks Ovid's tale to give it a feminist slant: while Higgins teaches Eliza to speak and act like a duchess, she also asserts her independence, adamantly refusing to be his creation.

This Penguin Classics edition is the definitive text produced under the editorial supervision of Dan H. Laurence, with an illuminating introduction by Nicholas Grene, discussing the language and politics of the play. Included in this volume is Shaw’s preface, as well as his ‘sequel’ written for the first publication in 1916, to rebut public demand for a more conventionally romantic ending.

For more than sixty-five years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,500 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Review
One of Shaw's best works, Pygmalion is a perceptive comedy of wit and wisdom about the spunky flower girl and her irascible speech professor. The flower girl Eliza Doolittle teaches the egotistical phonetics professor Henry Higgins that to be a lady means more than just learning to speak like one. The performance by the L.A. Theatre Works is technically flawless and a world-class performance of a theatrical classic. -- Midwest Book Review

From the Inside Flap
One of Shaw's most enduring works, Pygmalion is an insightful comedy of class relations and perceptions, as played out between a Cockney flower girl and the irascible speech professor who has taken her on as a pet project. Described by critics as "a play of great vitality and charm," Pygmalion inspired the award-winning stage and film productions of Lerner and Loewe's musical, My Fair Lady.

An L.A. Theatre Works full-cast performance featuring Roslyn Alexander, Shannon Cochran, Denise du Maurier, Rebecca MacLean, David New, Kenneth J. Northcott, Nicholas Pennell, Nicholas Rudall, Ben Whitehouse and Laura Whyte.

About the Author
Goerge Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) was one of the most prolific writers of the modern theater. He invented the modern comedy of ideas, expounding on social and political problems with a razor-sharp tongue. He won the 1925 Nobel Prize for literature. Dan H. Laurence is series editor for the works of Shaw in Penguin. W. J. McCormack is professor of literary history at Goldsmith's College, London.

Nicholas Grene is Professor of English Literature at Trinity College, Dublin, a Senior Fellow of the College, a Member of the Royal Irish Academy and a Life Member of Clare Hall, Cambridge. He has published widely on Shakespeare, drama, and Irish literature, and his books include Bernard Shaw: A Critical View (1984), Shakespeare's Tragic Imagination (1992), The Politics of Irish Drama (Cambridge University Press, 1999) and Shakespeare's Serial History Plays (Cambridge University Press, 2002). Among his most recent books are Yeats's Poetic Codes (2008), the New Mermaids edition of Major Barbara (2008), Synge and Edwardian Ireland (co-edited with Brian Cliff, 2011), and a memoir Nothing Quite Like It: An American-Irish Childhood (2011). He has been invited to speak in over twenty countries and has been a visiting professor at the University of New South Wales, Dartmouth College and the University of Paris IV (Sorbonne).

WARNING....abridged version

Although I love Pygmalion, this is an ABRIDGED version. Many scenes are not included, particularly at the end of each act. If you want an unabridged version, I would suggest the Penguin Classics edition.

The Evolution of Pygmalion
By christine
Pygmalion is a brilliant success by George Bernard Shaw to modernize the legendary Greek tale of a sculptor who falls in love with his artsitic creation and wishes to bring her to life. The rags-to-riches tale of Eliza Doolittle captivates the reader with its fast paced storyline, and witty dialogue. Shaw fascinates the reader with complicated characters such as Henry Higgins, Doolittle, and Colonel Pickering. Set in England, during a period of sophistication and elegance, Higgins and Pickering were faced with the seemingly impossible task of transforming a filthy flower girl (Eliza) into a beautiful duchess. The outrageous antics that ensue are both humorous and entertaining. Shaw's playful dialogue and timeless plot have been updated to fit the social and cultural standards of our time. For example, Alan Jay Lerner's My Fair Lady is an internationally acclaimed musical adaptation of Shaw's classic play. 1999 brought yet another adaptation of Pygmalion, in the form of the film She's All That, penned by R. Lee Fleming Jr. This teen comedy brings a new twist to the classic characters of Shaw's play. Pygmalion is a quick read and an enjoyable way to spend the day, and the characters in the story will remain with you forever.

Two-fer-one: the play and the musical
By Anne Salazar
This is a really nice edition since it has George Bernard Shaw's original text AND the script of Lerner and Loewe's musical adaptation, including the lyrics. I actually read the play in the Simon and Schuster paperback edition and followed each act by reading this book's My Fair Lady; the lyrics are a lot of fun to read, just as they were fun to hear in the movie or the soundtrack or on the stage.

While I was reading Pygmalion, Henry Higgins comes across as even more insufferable than the character as depicted by Rex Harrison. But Shaw was trying to make a point in his play -- actually, several points -- about the English language. For example, the Publisher's Note in this edition quotes Shaw in 1902 discussing what he emphatically states as the stupid, unnecessary use of apostrophes in such words as won't, can't, haven't, etc., and it strikes me that in today's abbreviated computer-speak (lol, omg, etc.) his desire is finally come to pass. Oh well, it only took a hundred years.

But the use of apostrophes is just one point made seriously but humorously in both play and musical, and you really need to read both to understand the full message about the use of language and "types" of people, including Eliza's father, not to mention the Conclusion to the play not widely known by the non-readers among us. I thought both the play and the musical were delightful and this is a wonderful edition because it includes the full text of both, but the Simon and Schuster edition has Shaw's complete Epilogue.

Like it says for Engineers...
By Juan Gustavo Sanchez
I'm an Electronic and Computer Systems Engineer, but in my spare time I like to do Mathematics, specially Real & Functional Analysis, I didn't go to any formal courses, but thanx to this book I had the possibility to learn these abstract subjects, now the part that I like most is to analyze proofs in any other subject of Mathematics dissecting their steps using what is taught in this book. I have, I thing, all the other books that talk about proofs, but for me this is the best.

P.S.:
This book works for Mathematicians too.

Recomendation:
Now you can have a Real Analysis Book that use the Dr. Solow Method of analyzing proofs, its name is: Introduction to Real Analysis by Michael J. Schramm

The definite guide to mathematical proofs.
By Burak Selcuk Soyer
I think this is the only book you should consider first when looking at how mathematical proofs are constructed and read. It is very clearly and fluently written. At the inner covers the various proof technique's main points are illustrated for quick reference, which comes very handy when you want to look up a proof techique without going into its details. This book contains all the important proof techniques you may require in your life as a student.
The main point of this book, of course, is to teach you how to write proofs by yourself by showing you how to construct and to disentangle dense written proofs. It is not enough to learn to write a proof, it also essential to know how to approach dense, compact wirtten proofs in order to learn from them. This one is the essential guide to mathematical proofs out there. I hope you enjoy it

Empire (Cartel Book 3), by Lili St Germain

The breathtaking finale to the USA Today bestselling Cartel trilogy.

People aren't born monsters.
They're made that way.
They're created, fuelled by one singular moment in time when their universe shatters.
I'd been with Dornan Ross for the better part of a decade. Slept in his bed, sewn up his wounds, tasted his blood, seen inside his soul.
But even I wasn't prepared for what he did.
I should have known it would always come down to this, from the very moment I laid eyes on him in that motel.
I should have known his salvation was too good to be true.
Because it's all gone now, the impossible love I had for him bleeding away in the darkness that came afterward.
Now there's only hate.
Now I just want to escape.
Even if it means I have to kill him to be free.

Before the Gypsy Brothers series there was the Cartel - from USA Today bestselling author Lili St Germain.

Praise for the Cartel trilogy:

'Awesome job Lili ... I am ready to hop on the back of a bike and join the club!' LiteraryGossip.com

'I can't believe it took me this long to finally pick up this author ... sign me up for more of the Gypsy Brothers!' Jasmine, GoodReads

'Sensational, shocking, compelling and totally addictive ... the best when it comes to dark, brooding and bloody romance' Kelly, Perusing Princesses

For me it didn't detract from the short story and I rather like the fact that we are kept guessing
By Jeanette J.
Quick read as an interlude to the rest of the series. The ending was left open ended which some readers have complained about but I think the purpose was for the individual reader to use their imaginations a bit more . For me it didn't detract from the short story and I rather like the fact that we are kept guessing.

I love the Ruth books by Elly Griffiths. My only concern with this short story is without the background of the other books, one may have trouble following the family and friend relationships.
