Great Book!

Initially I purchased the 2nd edition of this book, but realized that some of the chapters were updated and that I would have access to the online material, so I purchased it. The questions are extremely helpful for the NCLEX PDA questions, but also SATA (select all that apply) too. The book also has case studies that really help you critically think about the situations. However, the online material includes the same questions (including the case studies) that are in the book. If you prefer to not have the physical book, you can purchase the online questions for around $20. This helps you gain practice of taking a computerized test. They have two modes, exam mode and study mode. You can also test yourself based on the chapters, concepts, QSEN competencies, etc.

I gave this only 4 stars because although it is an excellent book, it would've been better to see additional questions available online rather than the same questions that are in the book. I would recommend this book to anyone who is taking the NCLEX. It is extremely helpful and includes the rationales for each question. But, like I said, if you don't have to have the physical book, it really isn't necessary since all the material is available for a decent price online on the evolve website.

A MUST for RN Boards

definitely get this book prior to Boards its the only book that makes clear since in how and why the correct answers are correct, it is a thin book easy to read with 3 pages to each chapter. BUT, your way of thinking will be completely clearer on how to think on answering all questions. Donna

I rented this book on the advice from my NCLEX coordinator after I failed the exam the first time with 265 questions. I had used Kaplan the first time around and spent two weeks hardcore prepping. I was devastated especially since I already had a job offer. This book really helped me focus on just prioritization per staff role and tx of pts. Along with this book, I used Saunders and Davis. The second time around, I passed with 75 questions and all of them felt too easy to be true. Forget all the money you pay for companies like Kaplan and spend the $20 renting LaCharity instead!

Really the ONLY worthwhile RPG treatment of Deities.

The Primal Order, by Peter Adkison, was the first product from gaming company Wizards of the Coast, now best-known for their collectible card game "Magic: The Gathering"; at that time, WotC was a just-starting roleplaying game company. The Primal Order was designed to eliminate two major flaws in the then-current treatment of deities in roleplaying games; either said deities were treated as all-powerful beings (leading to a great deal of difficulty if two different gods wanted different things, AND eliminating the high-heroic possibility of direct conflict between gods and mortals, cf. Conan, Greek and Norse myth, etc.), or they were basically ordinary characters with really really really high statistics (making it hard to differentiate between a god and a buff mortal).

The Primal Order changed this by introducing Primal Energy, a form of power usable ONLY by the gods and giving them certain advantages. The mechanics of The Primal Order ("TPO") are simple, direct, and efficient, the powers involved well-thought out, and other sections, dealing with godly politics, plane/dimension interactions, and even PC deities, are all well-written and interesting, with few flaws in either presentation or consistency -- a rarity in RPG publishing.

An additional plus to TPO is that it was designed as a "capsystem" -- a roleplaying supplement that works with ANY ESTABLISHED RPG SYSTEM. This means that to use TPO you do NOT have to give up your old system, or convert your old stuff to TPO's mechanics. TPO gives conversion rules in the back of the book for roughly 20 different game systems, all very simple and easily used. (earlier editions of the book contain conversions for Palladium and AD&D; later ones had those removed at the request/demand of the respective copyright holders).

Overall, a useful and well-written addition to any RPGers' library.

Sociolinguist Florian Coulmas, editor of The Handbook of Sociolinguistics and associate editor of The International Journal of the Sociology of Language, draws on disciplines ranging from psychology to epigraphy to present a work that is both far-reaching in its scope and deep enough to be of interest to serious theorists.

The encyclopedia itself consists of articles and entries of various lengths, all laid out in a typical A-to-Z format, with copious cross-referencing providing a wealth of threads for the inveterate browser. The entries themselves range from short definitions of concepts to longer articles on more complex topics, such as morphogenesis (the idea that all writing can be traced back to a single system), orthographic reform, and dyslexia. Over 400 figures and 1,600 tables illustrate not only the world's orthographies but also such things as the Mormon alphabet, the elements comprising Mayan logograms (written signs representing whole words), and Babylonian clay tablets. All this, plus a comprehensive bibliography, makes The Blackwell Encyclopedia of Writing Systems an indispensable reference work for scholars and a thoroughly enjoyable browse for anyone interested in human communication.

Nearly 80 international scholars, the editors among them, have contributed entries in The World's Writing Systems covering all scripts officially used throughout the world as well as their historical origins, each with an extensive bibliography. Included are tables of alphabets and syllabaries as well as script samples, usually featuring transliteration, transcription, and gloss of the text. The essays are grouped by topics, but a detailed index guides the user to specific terms or languages desired. There is even a section with entries treating notation systems used for music and movement. The Blackwell Encyclopedia of Writing Systems is arranged in dictionary format without an index, but with a substantial bibliography. Coulmas's (Writing Systems of the World, Blackwell, 1989) coverage is not nearly as comprehensive as the Oxford publication. In the article on the Cree Syllabary all scripts are mentioned, but tables are not provided for Inuktitut (Inuit language) or Chipewyan. "Gothic" script is discussed with only incidental reference to the term Fraktur, for which an interesting history is provided in the Oxford work. This, however, does not mean that the Coulmas encyclopedia is not a useful reference tool. Both publications are recommended for most reference collections, but The World's Writing Systems is clearly the more technically detailed. The determining factors for purchase will be price and needs of library clientele. There is a third choice for public or school libraries with limited resources: Akira Nakanishi's Writing Systems of the World (Tuttle, 1980). This inexpensive (pap. $14.95) ready-reference tool concentrates on modern languages and their scripts, with examples from newspapers, a color map of world writing systems, an index, and a bibliography.?Edward K. A fascinating vademecum

This is the only book that I have yet found that compares to David Diringer's -The Alphabet: A Key to the History of Mankind-.

It is not quite so complete in its coverage of obscure scripts as Diringer, and it makes far fewer attempts to analyse the history of the scripts. On the other hand, because it covers less such territory, the exemplars of the scripts and the tables of the characters and their values in this book are far more legible. The alphabetic arrangement of the material makes it easy to find which system you want.

Another of this book's strengths is that at least some attempt is made to explain how the phonemes of the many languages are expressed by the scripts in question; in many languages, from Tibetan to English, the relationship between alphabet and speech is subtle and complex. Obviously, this information will be cursory and incomplete, but having some is better than having none, and it is at least handy to know whether you are dealing with phonemic or with etymological spellings. This will help you not only to transliterate, but also to read, them.

Not Quite the Best

After reading previous reviews, I was excited about flipping through my own copy of the encyclopedia; however, I quickly became disappointed. For all the work and study that went into the production of the book, there is no doubt to its value to the linguistic community; however, keep the following points in mind: 1) the entry on the Anglo Saxon alphabet contradicts itself (identifying 25 letters in the text, but showing a different set of 25 letters, demonstrating 26 in total). 2) The entry on the misnamed "Mormon Alphabet" is appalling--those who used it over a century ago called it the Deseret Alphabet; and it's creation was commissioned by Brigham Young in the 1840s--it was not reveled to Joseph Smith on Gold Plates in the 1830; to claim such shows marked assumptions of the author based solely on previously-known knowledge of the sect.

Furthermore, the Figures and table are of photocopies quality, some of the characters so small that distinction between them cannot be easily recognized. Nor do the tables of alphabets line up with their entries. Nor are the tables uniform, but seem to be cut-and-paste tables from other sources.

The text has value, but some of the scholarship is dubious, and the graphic presentation is shambles.

Great overview of a fascinating tpic

This book is a great starting place for people who are interesting in the many ways people have encoded language by means of writing. The descriptions of most systems are complete enough that one can get a real feel for how they work (if not perhaps all the details of the most complex systems). It also includes brief articles on topics such as calligraphy, the status of alphabetic writing versus other systems, and the like. While some of these are subjects of heated scholarly debate, Coulmas provides balanced explanations of the issues.A wonderful overview of the intricate and beautiful ways people write the world over.Other books that would interest readers of this are:"The World's Writing Systems" from Oxford University Press is the best single reference for complete descriptions of scripts. But at nearly [$$$] in hardcover, it's relatively inaccessible to the general reader. It's also targeted to a more professional audience and is not as good for browsing around. As an anthology of articles by experts it is both more authoritative, and a bit more uneven than Coulmas."Writing Systems: A Linguistic Introduction" by Geoffrey Sampsonis more of a discussion of the issues raised for linguistics by a variety of writing systems. Sampson's book includes a detailed discussion of the Chinese system.

Extremely intelligent and well written account of "spirit contact" throughout the ages.

Excellent book. Highly readable. Entertaining. What this book offers is not a grand theory of spirits and spirit contact so much as a secular overview of the evidence for humankind's involvement with the "spirit world" since its earliest beginnings through the present. Myself, I do not subscribe to any comprehensive theory as to whether spirits are real, or what their nature and goals might be, etc. But I deeply value books like this which draw together so much evidence with regard to spirit contact in all ages and explain and reflect on the evidence in simple and often elegant terms. The book is very well researched and very well documented and contains a lot of interesting references for further study in the field. I felt Brennan's criticism of the "skeptics" (those who discount the paranormal out of hand) were sound. The last few chapters of the book I found particularly intelligent and persuasive. But overall, it is an extremely ambitious and satisfying study. Highly recommended.

Wonderfully Readable Scholarly History of Spirits

W. H. Brennan's history of the effect of spirits on human civilization is a great read whether you personally believe in spirits or not. Impeccably researched and footnoted yet written with lively and even entertaining prose, Whisperers will hold the interest of even the most diehard skeptic.

Those of us who have been calling for a new, more comprehensive paradigm for Western knowledge for ages will be absolutely thrilled by this book.

In recent years, the tide has started to turn against the strident voices forever insisting that magic and spirits are bunk, pure and simple. What we take for granted is changing. Discoveries in quantum physics continue to open doors to other realities, and people are less reticent to share personal experiences and their own understanding of esoteric phenomena. Even if physicists still cringe when people they consider to be 'fringe' thinkers mention the 'q' word, even briefly, writers do it anyway, the point of being that, seriously, there really ARE 'more things in heaven and earth' than are dreamt in the old philosophy.

What really impressed me is that Brennan doesn't need the 'q' word at all in his history, so compelling are the facts, and so good is he at documenting them. The book is based on his University of Exeter master's thesis. An earlier, shorter version received the imprimatur of formal academia. This is no small matter, since in past years it has been next to impossible to write on such topics without ruining one's academic reputation or losing funding or tenure or both. Brennan makes the point that professional academics have all the same information he has, but the threat of career implosion prevents them from publicly reaching his conclusions.

This is a good enough reason to read the book all by itself, but an even better one is this:

If spirits are real, and spirit communication is real, and magic is real, and we refuse to look at any of it seriously or research if in any way, what does that make us? Sitting ducks I'd say, and if you aren't disturbed by Brennan's material on Nazism and its uses of the Occult, I just don't know what to say. I suppose you also park your car in Detroit and eat lunch meat made from pink slime, and that's your business, go ahead and keep it up, but for myself, I want to know more.

Brennan's news isn't all grim. Lots of positive and/or neutral things have come of spirit/human interaction too, and Brennan provides many historical anecdotes and resources. The healing arts, for example, may in fact have originated from spirit contact.

I have been slowly but surely putting together a collection of serious modern texts on spirits and related topics, and it is so encouraging to see more and more of them year after year. New paradigms begin this way: Failing to gain traction within traditional academia, (or gaining only a little on the outermost margins), some researchers, scientists, historians, and philosophers will go ahead and write their books anyway, pursue their ideas anyway, and before you know it, the old way has passed into the realm of phlogiston and leeches and Martian canals and the new way is already here.

Whisperers deserves a place of honor in this emerging library.

I can't wait to read what Brennan writes next.

Contrary to A. Washburne's suggestion that Whisperers has `no sources, no cites' the book features a tightly-printed 8-page bibliography and some 426 end notes over 18 pages, all but a handful of which refer the reader to Brennan's sources for his central argument (which, incidentally, goes far beyond the John Brown story.)

A super quick, super cute twist on the idea of the traditional Cinderella tale

After finishing THE MYSTERY PRINCE, I’ll admit I was pretty disappointed. Really, Mary? You couldn’t go ahead and make it a full length novel? I mean come on, at least make it a collection and continue the story!

Seriously though, Mary’s novella was a super quick, completely twisted spin on the tale of Cinderalla. I knew it would be cute when I read the summary, and I wasn’t disappointed.

Anyway, it wouldn’t be a Psychocat Reads Review without running THE MYSTERY PRINCE through the usual criteria.

The Characters: Given the short period of time you have to develop characters in a novella, Mary did a fantastic job. I felt like I was able to get to know Zoe, Tristan, and Nor very quickly. The kings and Prince Rand were a bit slower to figure out, but as more secondary characters that made sense. I’ve always loved the Nor (or Nor equivalent) in the Cinderella tales, so I was glad Mary didn’t forego that in her new version.

The Relationships: The story is a fairy tale, so the idea of love at first sight completely works well. To me though, the pieces that made the story more endearing is the obvious affection between Zoe and Tristan and the people they are surrounded by. It was clear throughout that pair of them weren’t in this alone.

Too Perfect of Perfectly Flawed: As noted above, the story is a fairy tale, so I don’t expect the same level of human flaws as I do in story based more in reality. That said, Mary didn’t make her characters completely perfect, and that made the story even better.

Final Rating: 5 STARS! This is a super quick, super cute twist on the idea of the traditional Cinderella tale. As I mentioned in the intro, I’d love it if Mary continued Zoe and Tristan’s tale, maybe even throw in some more of what was going on with Prince Rand.

Fun to read.

What a fun story! Mary Waibel has given us a different take on the Cinderella story that gives us hope of "love at first sight". Even in this short novella, Mary was able to spin a tale that makes us care about the characters and follow in their quest to find their true love.

I loved Princess Zoe. She was smart, courageous, and confident. The king has given her a time-limit to find a husband or he will arrange a marriage for her. Noe want her happy ever after, and agrees to a masked ball where she will meet all the eligible Princes, but how can you fall in love after dancing with someone for only 15 minutes? Tristan is only at the ball because Prince Rand, who he protects, falls ill and the king asks him to attend in place of the prince. Nor, a friend of the king and very gifted in wisdom and knowledge, joins Tristan and the adventure begins.

My favorite scene was of Tristan and Zoe in the garden. That is when you get to really know and care about their story.

I enjoyed this story but would have loved it to be a full book and let the characters squirm even more. As a hero, Tristan fell a little short with his lack of confidence but his insight and consideration of others won me over.. We see just a glimpse of Prince Rand and I would also like to know more about his story, maybe in a future book. I would definitely look forward to reading this author again.

A fun read for fans of royals and romance

Princess Zoe must find a prince to marry. Instead of an arranged marriage her father has agreed to allow her time to find someone she might possibly love. The eligible princes are invited to a masquerade ball in order for her to meet each of them.

Prince Rand is ill and his father sends Rand’s guard, Tristan, in his place. Tristan and Rand grew up together and even look alike. I loved this aspect of the story, because I have a life long friend myself and, yes, we look alike and are always mistaken for sisters.

Tristan and Zoe feel an immediate connection with each other. Though Tristan is there to secure Rand’s place at Zoe’s side, once his feelings surface he realizes he doesn’t want to do that and he leaves her without sharing his name, or Rand’s. Instead he leaves her with a memento – a navigation device.

Determined to find the man who gave her the device, she sets out on a journey that reunites her with not only her mystery prince, but also Prince Rand. Faced with the look alike men, she isn’t certain which one was the masked gentleman she met at the dance.

I don’t want to tell you more and ruin the fun. The Mystery Prince wove together some of my favorite story aspects, discovery and a journey. Mary Waibel is very good at creating heart-fluttering moments. If you like a sweet romance, this is a good one for you.

Jean-Claude Mezieres and Pierre Christin created ValerianA" in 1967 after working in the USA together, one as a cowboy, the other a teacher. First of this classic franco-belgium sf series

This volume is the first of the "Valerian" series (here called "Valerian and Laureline"), a classic and long running franco-belgium science fiction series. This series is credits with influencing several prominent science fiction movies.

Valerian and Laureline are spatio-temporal agents for the future earth empire Galaxity. They can travel in space and time from the 28th century. Valerian is an agent from that time, whereas Laureline is actually a peasant girl from the 14th century who joined him. In this story, they must travel back in time to 1986 New York in pursuit of a criminal from their time. Earth at that time was devastated by a nuclear war (the album was originally published in 1970, so this was the "future" for them). V&L know that Earth will rebuild, so they avoid messing with the past, but are successful with their mission.

Cinebooks plans on reprinted the whole series, many for the first time in English, like this album, at a rate of about 2 per year. I look forward to them, as I've only gotten the prior 8 of the albums that have been reprinted in the US. I wish they would also reprint the actual first album, "Bad Dreams" that comes before this one, that shows how Laureline joins Valerian.

Fantastic looking comics

Fantastic looking comics. The translation does seem to be a little plain or uninspired, but I assume they're pretty straight forward. A really fun looks at 60s Sci-Fi in the vein of STAR WARS and DOCTOR WHO, but that is more likely to have influenced those franchises than to be influenced by them.

Beginning of a great adventure

THE CITY OF SHIFTING WATERS by Jean-Claude Mézières and Pierre Christin is not the greatest science-fiction comic book ever. But it is the beginning of what is one of the most influential, entertaining and long-lasting sci-fi comic books. Ever.

The cartoonish illustration style of Mézières, in the European tradition, has been a problem for those attempting to break into the superhero-saturated U.S. market. But given the recent interest and popularity in the more fluid and expressive illustration styles of the likes of Darwyn Cooke or Jordi Bernet, it might finally be the right time for appreciating the mastery of the nonrealistic line.

Writer Christin, whose later collaborations with Enki Bilal and Jacques Tardi are equally noteworthy, is still learning his craft here. There are a couple of long expository sequences, the characters whose Hawksian banter would soon move to a much higher level of sophistication are now there more to just set off the scenery, and it’s all a bit messy.

Yet some of the concepts are already potent, like a scene where we have flood victims cursing our heroes for not helping them while they stand on the roofs of their devastated homes. He would in future books sharply comment on issues like colonialism or imperialism, but always in a manner that distinguishes an artist from a pompous fool — it enhances the story, gives it weight, but never preaches or takes over.

In the end, any minor issues I have with this book are at most inconveniences. THE CITY OF SHIFTING WATERS is overboiling with iconic images — many of them original, some of which are riffs on older ideas — all crammed into a superb adventure that is still only a modest beginning to one of the finest science-fiction comic books ever created.

Another BS Real Estate guru promoting his site?....

It only takes a few seconds for you to realize that the author is affiliated with the site www.biggerpockets.com . Oh great another real estate investing guru who just so happens to funnel you into his site! But what happens when you get to the site? What services do you have to pay for to get real estate investing Information? The same thing that happens as you continue to read the book, you star to say Wow This is great information! This is better then most of the top books on real estate investing, actually explaining "how" to get started and actually steps of action to take. As I read and explored the site I realized this book is amazing and the author knows what he is talking about and actually wants to help instead of asking me to sign up for a week long crash course on making millions of dollars in real estate. Does the author say it's easy to become rich over night? No he doesn't! He shows how any average person can get involved in rental property investments. This book is one of the most comprehensive books on the topic. I would recommend this book to people who actually want to learn and get into real estate investing. This is one of the few books that is not only a good introduction but also has a ton of information for seasoned real estate investors as well. I was truly amazed and to think I almost skipped over this book because I thought it was one of those real estate scams! Great book with great information.

Invest in yourself before you invest in anything else

Great for both would-be landlords and landlords with a handful of units. If you're starting out, you should be reading everything you can get your hands on as each book will have gaps in its coverage that another book will start to fill in. This book fills in a lot of gaps that many other books don't address such as sources (other than MLS) for rentals, negotiation tips, and how important school districts and nearby amenities are to rental properties.

Another great addition to your investment toolkit. There are a TON of ways to invest in rentals. They definitely covered the details on best methods for the strategies used in investing. A lot of what goes into this is simply explaining the "black box" that is Real Estate Investing (REI). Brandon and the team break down the process step by step in an easy to digest fashion. This book is great for those who really want a window into the world investing. I would highly recommend it to those getting started as well as folks who have years of experience!

We have 5 month old twins and were ragged from feeding them every few hours around the clock until a mom suggested this book. Great advice and age appropriate schedules to train your baby to sleep thru the night. I only wish we'd discovered it sooner!

Miracle worker!

All my sisters recommended this book and at first I was skeptical....but as a brand new Mum all I can say is WOW....it works and don't hesitate. I followed the schedule and my baby girl was sleeping through the night within on week. (At 2 months of age). I am all for "demand feeding" at newborn age (the first 2 months) but beyond that I needed to get baby into a routine and encourage longer sleep patterns. The advice in this book was useful, straightforward and had lots of good examples/case studies to learn from. My baby is now 5 months old and sleeps from 7pm to 6am every night.....it is heaven!

An Excellent Resource for the new sleep-deprived parents!

This is an excellent read, and resource for those of us, who've been sleep-deprived as a result of having our first, and sometimes second and third child. My husband and I read it, got on the same page, and it didn't take but a couple of weeks to get our baby to fall asleep without having to rock/hold her for hours at a time. It's amazing!

LOVE THIS BOOK!

Anna Kiper was my first Semester Concepts teacher at Parsons The New School for Design in New York. Her illustrations are amazing. What i love about her book is that is shows marker rendering against painting, she makes them look identical. Also, fabric rendering techniques are amazing, really influenced me as a designer. I love her!

LOVE THIS BOOK!!!

I have never seen an illustration book as beautiful as this one and the bonus is the price tag. Anna Kiper is very talented and looking through the book is an absolute delight. If you are an aspiring fashion illustrator or a fashion designer this book is a treat, the most important part is that she makes it so much easier to illustrate difficult things and make them look realistic. Who would think to use a sand paper to create a perfect tweed texture, or use an actual tulle to illustrate one in seconds? Well, she has million of shortcuts like these.

Anna Kiper is my art and design professor at FIT in New York, NY and this book is an exact material that we learn in class, so if you don't have the time to attend her classes, this is the best next thing.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!

What a great way to learn rendering! Anna Kiper provides modern day techniques to make beginners learn fashion art with style. Her book is comprehensive and a work of art in itself! I would recommend this book to any one interested in learning about fashion illustration! Great buy!
