Review
I look forward to using activity pages from The CBT Art Activity Book - the detail and content of each page is ideal for the kind of art journaling and creative expression activities I do with my clients. The use of cognitive behavioral therapy within the handouts is a bonus! -- Bonnie Thomas, LCSW Child and Family Counselor and author of 'How to Get Kids Offline, Outdoors, and Connected to Nature: 200+ Activities to Encourage Self Esteem, Mindfulness, and Wellbeing' A little treasure inspired by cognitive behavioural psychotherapy ideas and creative principles. Beautiful and easy to use worksheets, which will compliment a clinician's tool kit. Especially helpful for brief interventions with emphasis on emotional exploration. -- Themis Kyriakidou, MA ATh, MSc FPC, Art Psychotherapist I am neither a CBT therapist nor an artist - and yet it feels like this book was produced with me in mind. A synthesis of informative text and inspirational designs that leave me excited about new possibilities in my work with a whole range of people I'm working with - young people, adults and families. This book will appeal, and be extremely useful to counsellors and therapists from a broad spectrum of theoretical orientations, and is by no means limited to those who describe themselves as 'CBT therapists' or as being 'artistic.' Bravo Jennifer, this is a wonderful resource for enhancing and deepening the therapeutic encounter. -- Paul Stockwell, UKCP Registered Family and Systemic Psychotherapist and Clinical Supervisor What a brilliant resource for therapists working with young people! The worksheet designs are immediately engaging and aesthetically suited to young people. Each section starts with brief helpful and accessible information for the counsellor. I am sure that this is what young people want - an opportunity to have conversations with adults on their own terms, choosing a word, a question, a pattern to work into. An important addition for the counselling field. Adults will want to use it too! -- Dr Gail Simon, Principal Lecturer in Systemic Practice, University of Bedfordshire The author sums up the core principle of CBT therapy in a very readable, clear an concise way... Guest's lovely, intricately patterned backgrounds and frames are reminiscent of the current spate of adult colouring books and allow the sheets to appeal to different age groups... One of the things I love about this book is that the author's drawings invite the user to "have a go", "make their mark" and not worry whether they are "artistic" or not... I have certainly enjoyed using this book myself, as well as inviting clients to use it to help them explore their own thoughts, and would happily recommend it to other therapists. -- Trisha Packer, counsellor and supervisor BACP Children & Young People

Need a digital version.
By S. Yacco
Great worksheets for students to express themselves. Would be perfect if you could buy a digital version or in a 3 ring binder. It says "photocopiable" but the pages don't lay flat enough to make a nice copy.

Overpriced for Content
By A. Bauer
There are definitely some useful exercises in this book, but half of the book contains coloring sheets. Wish I had known that before ordering. I can get mandalas for free online. The other coloring sheets are nicely designed letters of the alphabet-one per page, but I'm not sure how I will use those. They don't seem very CBT-oriented, which is what I was seeking in purchasing this book.

The first half of the book is great. The second half was a waste of my money.

By Amazon Customer
I get bored running the same discussion based groups on the adult inpatient unit that I work on and was very excited when I stumbled upon this coloring book. Has a number of great coloring pages that I can use with clients in group while we discuss CBT concepts. I wish it included more pages with theraputic content as the back half includes a coloring page for each letter of the alphabet and a couple of mandalas, but those are usually nice to have on hand for patients that enjoy coloring in their down time. Cute book with theraputic value that I will definately be using more of in the future!

Common Core Sense: Tapping the Power of the Mathematical Practices, by Christine Moynihan

The Standards for Mathematical Practice provide an excellent foundation for encouraging students to think, reason, and persevere like mathematicians. Many elementary school teachers, however, face a challenge unpacking these practices and figuring out how to implement them in their classrooms.

Christine Moynihan wrote Common Core Sense: Tapping the Power of the Mathematical Practices with the goal of making the practices more explicit, learnable, and accessible. Moynihan shows what each practice might look, sound, and feel like in the classroom using the four-part GOLD framework:
G Go for the goals. What are the major purposes of the practice?
O Open your eyes & Observe. What should you see students doing as they utilize the
practice? What should you see yourself doing?
L Listen. What should you hear students saying as they utilize the practice? What should you
      hear yourself saying?
D Decide what you need to do in order to make the most of the practice.

This timely text devotes one chapter to each practice. The consistent framework of the book, similar in structure to Moynihan s Math Sense, provides an easy way to learn, assess, and deepen your own understanding of each practice to mine the GOLD.

Great Resource!
By Jennifer Larochelle
This is a great resource for seasoned and newbie educators alike. I'm an ELA girl by nature and choice and this brought the math standards into a clear workable focus for me. Well organized, easy to read this book also has reflections from teachers and students on each of the mathematical practices. It will not be gathering dust on my shelf as I see myself using it regularly in my planning.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-9–Tamora Pierce's magic series continues with the third book of the series (Scholastic, 1998) focused on one of the young super-talented magicians, Daja, the only surviving member of a band of sea-going traders lost in a shipwreck. Each of the four has a specific talent, but unplumbed depths of hidden abilities continue to emerge as the foursome explores the unusual ties that have linked them mentally, emotionally, and magically. Their four mentors are here too, with assorted dukes, ladies, academic mages (lacking the "wild" talent of these young people), and many other characters. This full cast production performs a great service for listeners by using a different voice for each character and audio effects to highlight the mind-talking. Music cues at the beginning of each tape are helpful, but there are no chapter listings to coordinate following along with the book. The readers give lively and engaging performances, and the part of the narrator is read by the author, who adds depth to the telling and provides a nice touch for fans. Pierce's pace and emphasis are deliberate, helping to keep the complex interrelationships of mages and their magic in the listeners' minds. Familiarity with the previous two books is not necessary to understand this title. A popular addition to libraries with fans of the previous books in the series as well as for those new to this fantasy series. –Jane P. Fenn, Corning-Painted Post West High School, NY

Review
"The latest in the series is as innovative as the first two. A fascinating and fully realized world".

BOOK THREE IN THE CIRCLE OF MAGIC QUARTET

Outcast Trader Daja, along with her fellow mages-in-training, journeys from Winding Circle to the Gold Ridge Mountains, where drought threatens widespread famine. There, Daja creates an astonishing object: a living metal vine. A caravan of Traders covets the vine, and Daja's dealings with her former people reawaken a longing for familiar ways.

Daja must choose -- should she return to the Traders, or remain with the Winding Circle folk who have become her family?

The Circle of Magic Continues: Daja's Book (#3)
By Murph01
The four friends, possessors of wild magic, continue the process of learning how to use and control their magics; their teachers/mentors, continue their own quest: to understand the power (particularly the combined power) of these youngsters. In this novel, they are all traveling with Sandry's uncle, the Prince, as he surveys the problems of his lands. In particular, the kingdom they are visiting is suffering from a severe drought and is plagued with raging fires. The resident mage, university trained in traditional methods of magic, is fiercely possessive of his power to control fires, but is showing signs of stress and fatigue. When he dies during a sudden outbreak of high crown fires, all the mages, both mentors and mentees, must collaborate to save people's lives; in particular, Tris--who has been banished from any contact with her people, the Traders--must find new power and control when a fire threatens the Traders' caravan as it is departing.
Although this book focuses most heavily on Daja, she shares the stage with Briar, Tris, and Sandry, and we the readers continue to learn more about these great characters. I love the diversity of Pierce's characters: a mix of male and female heroes, coming from an astonishing range of economic and ethnic backgrounds. She does not brush aside the real problems that their differences can create, but she does show how experience and relationships can lead to new, stronger ties.
A worthy number 3 for this series: don't miss it!

book 3
By Loren Weaver
Daja's Book is the third in the Circle of Magic series by Tamora Pierce following four young mages on their learning adventures.

Off to the north with the Duke, the four are spreading their wings on a new adventure. Daja's outcast status and an interesting bit of magical accident leave her with a living metal plant and a Trader who wants to buy. Of course, she can't talk to Daja, so the fun begins.

Standing up for their foster-sister, Tris, Briar, and Sandry shame the Traders into doing business with Daja and she feels almost at home again. Of course, it can't last, and the dried-up, fireless forest soon turns against them. The four learn what it means to risk everything, even their own lives, to save others from certain death. And Daja gets a new magic out of it, too.

This is a fantastic series... I've read it more than once.
By Amazon Customer
Even though these books are meant for young adults, I would recommend them to adult fans of fantasy and adventure as well. While properly classified as fantasy, they have a novel-like feel to them, and the fact that they are in series is also a plus to me - I'm one of those folks that always wonders what happens to the other characters when the novel ends! The characters are very well developed and consistent across all of the books, and while the endings are always more or less happy, there is a lot of sadness and emotion along the way. The main characters come from diverse backgrounds, and have all had some serious obstacles to overcome - racism and class perception issues among them. Very well done!

Topics covered in detail include cytology, genetics, chemistry, ecology, physiology, geography and the history of the discipline. Emphasizing the biologic significance of the bryophytes, the author uses an abundance of elegant original illustrations to show the structure, diversity and the natural beauty of the bryophytes. There is also an extensive glossary of bryologic terminology. W. B. Schofield is Professor Emeritus at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. He is a former president of the American Bryological and Lichenological Society.

Introduction to Bryology
By E. Traver
Great book. Nicely written with terrific illustrations. Chapters are laid out by classes or orders of bryophytes, and there are several chapters about more general aspects such as physiology and genetics. The appendices offer information on collecting, mounting, and culturing as well as a basic key. Each chapter has its own references for further reading. A great intro to bryophytes.

To know a Liverwort is to Love a Liverwort
By Zenobia Woodlife
If you want to learn about and understand Moss, Hornworts & Liverworts - collectively known as Bryophytes - THIS BOOK IS STILL THE ONE TO START WITH. Encompassing and concise, it also has gorgeous line drawings which provide visual details that are hard to see sometimes because some of these plants are really small.

Two other books that will help the student of Bryophytes are: Bill & Nancy Malcom's MOSSES & other Bryophytes: AN ILLUSTRATED GLOSSARY and the British Bryological Society's Field Guide to British & Irish Bryophytes. Regardless of where in the world you find Bryo's these books will help you learn about these little lovelies.

Both The Introduction to Bryology and the Illustrated Glossary are OP and really should be re-printed...

Amazon.com Review
The Last Unicorn is one of the true classics of fantasy, ranking with Tolkien's The Hobbit, Le Guin's Earthsea Trilogy, and Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. Beagle writes a shimmering prose-poetry, the voice of fairy tales and childhood:

The unicorn lived in a lilac wood, and she lived all alone. She was very old, though she did not know it, and she was no longer the careless color of sea foam but rather the color of snow falling on a moonlit night. But her eyes were still clear and unwearied, and she still moved like a shadow on the sea.

The unicorn discovers that she is the last unicorn in the world, and sets off to find the others. She meets Schmendrick the Magician--whose magic seldom works, and never as he intended--when he rescues her from Mommy Fortuna's Midnight Carnival, where only some of the mythical beasts displayed are illusions. They are joined by Molly Grue, who believes in legends despite her experiences with a Robin Hood wannabe and his unmerry men. Ahead wait King Haggard and his Red Bull, who banished unicorns from the land.

This is a book no fantasy reader should miss; Beagle argues brilliantly the need for magic in our lives and the folly of forgetting to dream. --Nona Vero

From Publishers Weekly
Since it was first published in 1968, Beagle's beloved fantasy novel has been made into a stage play and a film—and now this gorgeous, emotive graphic novel adaptation. Set in a fully realized but slightly tongue-in-cheek fantasy world that has inspired everything from The Princess Bride to Stardust, Beagle's story is a romantic fable about a regal unicorn who leaves the forest she has protected since time immemorial to find more of her kin. After a short spell of imprisonment by a witch's traveling circus, she journeys onward with an accident-prone magician, hoping to find the answer to her quest in the land of a coldhearted king and a monstrously fearsome red bull. Along the way, the unicorn and her good-hearted but hapless companion have many encounters, including one with a Robin Hood–esque group of bandits who seem dropped in from a Monty Python skit. Beagle's sumptuously descriptive writing, adapted ably by Gillis, casts a spell throughout, while De Liz's glowing, painterly artwork meshes perfectly with the haunting otherworldly beauty of the story. The Post-Modern Fairy Tale
By mp
Along with the rest of the civilized world, my wandering memories often lead me back to two of my favorite childhood movies, "The Neverending Story" and "The Last Unicorn." Practically all I could remember of the latter was some skull yelling "Unicorn! Uuuunicorn!" That image and that voice have left a lingering discomfort in the back of my mind for years. A while back, I found a little time to investigate Michael Ende's novel, "The Neverending Story," and just recently, I managed to come across a copy of "The Last Unicorn," and I couldn't help but read it. In both cases, these novels have more than repayed my childhood memories, giving my adult mind philosophical and literary substance as well as real joy. Peter S. Beagle's 1968 novel, "The Last Unicorn," is much more than a simple fantasy story - though it is rife with magicians, mythical creatures, and all of the customary trappings. It is even more than a complex fantasy story - somehow Beagle enchants us into a timeless place where nothing seems unusual - "The Last Unicorn" creates a space for magic in our modern lives.
The novel begins as a unicorn overhears two hunters riding through her wood - the hunters debate whether unicorns exist anymore. The unicorn begins to wonder if indeed she is the last of her kind, and goes in search of other unicorns. She is caught sleeping by Mommy Fortuna, owner of the Midnight Carnival, who displays the unicorn for a time alongside a real harpy and a motley bunch of meek, hopeless animals who are made, through Fortuna's magic, to resemble other dangerous mythical beasts for the entertainment of travellers, tourists, and townsfolk. Schmendrick, a fairly useless magician, and an assistant to the Midnight Carnival, recognizes the unicorn for what she is, and freeing her, they set off together to find the unicorns. Once they are joined by a woodland dweller named Molly Grue, the company is complete. Their search brings them to the domain of King Haggard, who, along with the demoniacal, but eerily incorporeal Red Bull, seems to have something to do with the disappearance of the unicorns.
Though the novel is a quest, there isn't much real movement - the novel moves from the unicorn's wood, over land to Haggard's castle by the sea, which is where almost half of the novel takes place. The more significant quests here are ones of self-discovery, as the unicorn, Schmendrick, and Prince Lir, King Haggard's heir, must all try to figure out who they are, what they want to be, and how to accomplish their goals without being consumed by existential despair. Related questions the novel poses include speculations on the nature of the hero, on the metafictional nature of the fairy tale as a genre, and what the difference is between evil and self-interest, between love and hatred. "The Last Unicorn" is also a rumination on the nature of interpersonal (or interspecies) relationships, and is in spots as concerned with ecology and the environment as J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings."
However, far and away, the most compelling facets of "The Last Unicorn" for me are Beagle's minor touches, minutiae that some people might miss on a first reading. Seemingly meaningless conversations, like the one between the hunters which begins the novel, between Captain Cully and his disaffected latter-day Robin Hoods in the forest, or between a 'married' pair of blue jays betray a depth and attention to detail and a real artistry in Beagle's literary workmanship. They alert us, as certainly as Tolkien's work does, to the fact that we, the novel's readers, live in a prosaic world, divested of magic and enchantments. Beagle's novel shows that creating, living in, and sustaining a fantasy world can be as much work, and can involve as much pain as our own normal daily lives. Indeed, one amazing quality of "The Last Unicorn" is that it hardly differentiates between the normal modern world and that of the fairy tale. One reviewer mentions that the novel takes place in the Middle Ages - is it at all astonishing then, to hear Cully at one point mention the "field-recordings" that will one day be made of his oral poetry while he himself eats a taco?
"The Last Unicorn" has endured for almost 40 years because it manages to imbue things like "field-recordings" with a kind of magical quality that seems as natural as talking birds and butterflies. Beagle also reminds us that we are each heroes of our own stories - whether we stick to the literary conventions of genre or not. The inclusion of subtle anachronisms and metafictional commentaries like these clues us to Beagle's art - the creation of a new kind of fairy tale, one which attempts to make our own world, our own lives, sources of almost limitless wonder and joy, as well as of continuing epic challenges.

A story of wit and charm, immeasurable beauty and emotion.
By Kikyo C.
The Last Unicorn is one of most astounding books I have ever read. Not only because of the story, which is a fairytale in every sense of the word, but also because of Beagle's flawless writing, which weaves a spell of words and images that I find myself willingly ensnared in every time I open its pages. I find myself lingering over each sentence, each word, and I am astounded by the care with which he tells this tale.
Once upon a time, there was a unicorn. A beautiful unicorn... who was all alone. She sets out on a journey to seek others of her kind and is joined on her travels by a bumbling magician and an old spinster, neither of who are what they first appear to be. Encountering magical monsters, outlaws and suspicious townspeople, the three travelers find themselves at the gate of a forbidding castle wherein lives a cruel king and a gentle prince. It is in the walls of this castle that the truth lies. But can they accept what the truth will bring?
Beagle tells an amazing tale, of love and loss, of heartache and hope. Each of the characters in his work has such life and depth, and I see myself in each and every one of them. From an inept magician who desperately seeks to be more than what he is to the outlaws who cry out with loss of that which they have never known, there is so much life in these few short pages that I find myself reading and rereading each page, afraid lest I miss something. When Schmendrick cries, "I'll make you into a bad poet with dreams!" I want to laugh, but at the same time I want to cry with pity, with unexplainable sorrow for something I can't quite understand and am not sure I want to.
The Last Unicorn is about more than just a quest for unicorns. It is also a story about the things that we love and what we will do - or not do - for that love. It is about what really defines a hero, and what constitutes a happy ending. But most of all, it is about magic. Joy. Sadness. Beauty. It is about all the things we are and all the things we long to be. It is a breathtakingly beautiful story by a wonderful writer, and I recommend it as one of the best books I have ever read.

"The Last Unicorn" comic: a long-time fan's review
By M. Natisin
If you're contemplating purchasing the comic adaptation of "The Last Unicorn" , chances are that this will not be your first foray into the world created by Peter S. Beagle in his best-known novel. In "The Last Unicorn", a unicorn discovers that she is the last of her kind and sets out on a quest to discover that has become of her kin. If you're like me, you've read the book and watched the movie, and so as a fan you might wonder what this newest incarnation of the story has to offer.

The Last Unicorn comic gathers the 6 separate issues released by IDW publishing into one full color hard-cover volume. From a purely aesthetic standpoint the book design is impeccable, with violet foil lettering on front and back and a classy layout. The six chapters that make up the book are separated by pages that sport the same illustrations that were featured on the covers of the respective single comic issues.

There is immediately something a little more "grown up" about the comic adaptation as opposed to the animated movie. Renae de Liz's style may have much to do with this. Her illustrations tend more toward stylized realism than the far more soft, cartoony style employed in the movie. Ray Dillon's colors are atmospheric and brooding. Characters such as the Harpy Celaeno, Mommy Fortuna, Ruhk and King Haggard are actually frightening to look at in the comic version, while their movie versions are a little more approachable. For those comfortable with the representations of characters such as the unicorn (Lady Amalthea), Schmendrick and Molly Grue shown in the 80's animated movie, the character designs of the comic certainly pay homage to those designs.

What is particularly enjoyable about this adaptation is that plot points and scenes that were in the original novel but omitted from the movie have been included in the comic. There is a magician mentor named Nikos, who turned a male unicorn into a human. As in the novel, Schmendrick is cursed with youth, a side note that never made it into the animated feature. There is a city named Hagsgate again, and Arachne is back in Mommy Fortuna's Midnight Carnival as is "Elli". There is even a single page that alludes to the "blue bird" scene from the novel (in which a pair of married blue birds argue over whether or not the husband bird actually saw a unicorn).

The extras at the end of the book include interviews of both Peters S. Beagle and Peter Gillis, the man who adapted The Last Unicorn into a comic book format. There is a small art gallery in the back that features pieces by guest artists and small thumbnails of the six "alternate" comic book covers done by Frank Stockton. There are also half-page images taken directly from the comic (with the text bubbles removed) so that one may admire the layout of some very beautifully designed pages. These are often too small for my liking, but they are nice "extras".

The comic is *almost* a complete triumph. I say almost because there is one omission that really should have made it into the comic. Once again, King Haggard's four aged men-at-arms are mentioned only in passing dialogue. Much like in the animated movie, the characters are never seen and their small arc and subsequent return to youth is cut from the story. In his interview at the end of the comic, even Peter Gillis laments that these characters were once more cut out of the story due to page restrictions. Truly, it would have made this adaptation even more special to have this rather important plot point addressed in the comic book, even more so because it is left out of the movie. Other slight problems had to do with the panel pacing toward the end and the clunky descriptive text during the battle with the Red Bull. There was an over-use of sentences starting with "And..." that started to feel very redundant. But I feel for the illustrator, who doubtlessly had a challenge shoving as much as possible onto the small amount of additional pages that were added. The page-limit on the comic was reached before the completion of the series. A total of 12 extra pages had to be added... and paid for out-of-pocket--not by IDW.

For fans, the comic is invaluable and does both the novel and the movie justice while offering strengths that are individual to the comic adaptation. It is a generally faithful retelling, obviously drawn and translated from the novel by people who truly cared about the story and the quality of the art. If you are fond of the novel, the movie or both, the graphic novel will be a welcome addition to your collection. Enjoy!

From School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up–Narrated by an often heavy-handed Greek chorus of men who died of AIDS, this novel features the stories of one transgender and several gay teens. It focuses on Harry and Craig, friends and ex-boyfriends who have set out to beat the Guinness World Record for kissing. Harry's parents accept that he is gay and are there as witnesses, while Craig's parents find out that he's gay after his mother is told about their record-breaking attempt. Other characters include Tariq, the victim of a hate crime; boyfriends Neil and Peter; and female-to-male (FTM) transgender teen Avery and his love interest, Ryan. Finally, there is isolated, angry, and disaffected Cooper. He spends his nights trolling sex sites online and runs away from home when confronted by his furious parents. Although Levithan has a tendency toward didacticism, his characters are likable, with some more developed than others. The story will engage readers, both female and male. The author's note discusses the true events that inspired this story. Despite its flaws, this title is recommended based on subject need.–Nancy Silverrod, San Francisco Public Libraryα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
It’s impossible to ignore the context of Levithan’s latest novel. The timing is perfect—in the age of Dan Savage’s It Gets Better (2011) and recent Supreme Court rulings on marraige equality, a book meant for young adults features a real-life gay teen couple kissing on the cover, standing in for the book’s two fictional boys, ex-boyfriends hoping to share the world’s longest kiss. The story is narrated from the beyond by the “shadow uncles”—gay men of the AIDS generation—who tell millennial gay boys, “We don’t want our legacy to be gravitas.” These narrators marvel and remark upon Harry and Craig’s kiss (a protest of hate crimes committed against a friend), the impact on two other couples at different stages of their relationships, and a hopeless loner in clear emotional danger. Levithan leans intensely into this work, which occasionally reveals the gears grinding the piece into shape, thereby dissipating some of the magic. Still, there’s little doubt that this title, with its weight, significance, and literary quality, will find its way into LGBTQ and wider canons. Stock up. Grades 9-12. --Courtney Jones

David Levithan has written one of the best and most moving books I've ever read. Should be required reading.
By Larry Hoffer
David Levithan, you have slayed me once again. Every Day, and, of course, Will Grayson, Will Grayson, which you co-wrote with John Green, have taken their place among my favorite books of all time. And while I didn't think it could be possible, I loved Two Boys Kissing more than those. Seriously.

Seventeen-year-old former boyfriends Harry and Craig are planning to set a new Guinness World Record for continuous kissing. To do so, they'll need to kiss continuously for over 32 hours. This will take physical strength, yes, but also significant emotional fortitude and support from many, many people, since the sight of two boys kissing at all--let alone publicly for 32+ hours--will be difficult if not downright unacceptable for some.

While Harry and Craig undertake their record-setting quest, navigate their true feelings for one another, and deal with the myriad number of issues that will arise during this period, two other young couples are dealing with their own issues. Peter and Neil, who have been together for over a year, are struggling with trying to determine what their expectations of each other and their future should be, while Avery and Ryan, who just met, are struggling with issues of gender identity and all of the nerves of a blossoming relationship. Meanwhile, Tariq, a friend of Craig and Harry's, is trying to overcome his fears after being beaten up by a group of thugs, and Cooper is dealing with the aftermath of his parents' discovery of his homosexuality.

All of these storylines may seem somewhat typical, but Levithan develops each with depth and empathy in a short number of pages. And what lifts this book up even further is that it is narrated by a nameless Greek chorus of men who died of AIDS. Part lamentation for what they lost, part reflection on the struggles each of the characters are going through, since they've seen it all, their words are so insightful, so moving, so dead-on in many, many ways, I literally found myself tearing up multiple times as I flew through the book.

"You must understand: We were like Cooper. Or at least had moments when we were like Cooper. Just as we had moments when we were like Neil, Peter, Harry, Craig, Tariq, Avery, Ryan. We had moments when we were like each of you. This is how we understand. We wore your flaws. We wore your fears. We made your mistakes."

I read this entire book in one day, and I was moved and inspired beyond my expectations. Levithan made me laugh, think, and, as I mentioned earlier, cry with his words. I can't even begin to count the number of times he so perfectly captured many of the feelings I had as a teenager struggling with my sexuality, with self-esteem, with bullying, with wondering if my parents and family and friends would ever be able to accept me for who I was. And the book was pitch-perfect in its portrayal of the rush of emotions when you first meet someone you like and realize they feel the same way, the anxiety of wondering whether there will be a second date, the beauty of a first kiss.

I've said before how much I marvel at the state of YA fiction today, especially LGBT-themed fiction. I wish that Two Boys Kissing had existed when I was a teenager, because it would have been a tremendous help and comfort to me. I wish there was some way this book could be required reading for those struggling with their sexuality and with self-acceptance, as I believe it really could make a difference. Levithan doesn't create an unrealistic world where there are no problems and no struggles, but he shows how wonderful life has the potential to be, even when you don't think it can.

This is honestly one of the best books I've read in some time. Thank you, David Levithan, for this experience. I feel changed for the better.

Nothing Short of Revolutionary
By James Hiller
No doubt about it. David Levithan's new book, "Two Boys Kissing", is a revolutionary text that will be lauded as a milestone in young adult and gay literature for decades to come. That's a pretty hefty statement, yet its not hyperbole by any means. The book commends such praise for its beautiful originality, its poignancy, its realness and rawness.

Meet Harry and Craig, two boys who decide to break the world kissing record. Meet Avery and Ryan, two small town teens who meet at an ersatz prom and discover much about each other. Meet Cooper, who's version and vision of gay life is warped by family and the internet. Meet Tariq, who's bashing inspires the kissing. Meet Neil and Peter, two boys navigating their love. And meet the chorus of gay men who died from the AIDS epidemic, who omnisciently narrate the lives of the characters throughout the story, and well as their own, through the ingenious use of "we".

It's through the characters and this "gay Greek chorus" that Levithan manages to make his story compelling. As the men watch the kissing, and the lives of the other characters, they reflect on their own existence. Levithan honors both the reality of today's experience of being gay in our society as well as the lives of the men and women who came before us. This powerful dichotomy creates emotional, stunning moments in the novel that will cause you to reach for a Kleenex.

Levithan also manages to obliterate stereotypes through the novel. The stereotype shattering aspect of two boys kissing would be enough, but Levithan expands that throughout his story. If you think you know how the characters in the book should act, be prepared to be pleasantly and wonderfully surprised. Levithan has painted with words a more complex picture of people's reactions to two boys kissing, a vision almost of how life can be, and for some of us, how life is.

When asked about what this book is about, one could simply say two boys kissing, because that is the act that drives this story. But its more. Its so much more. In it, I see where I came from, where I am today, and where I will be in the future. This book is narrated with "we", but in reality, it's the story of us.

Your humor is your compass and your shield. You can hone it into a weapon or you can pull its strands out to make your very own cotton-candy blanket. You can’t exist on a diet of humor alone, but you can’t exist on a diet without it, either.

It is one thing to show someone your best, cleanest version. It’s quite another to make him aware of your deeper, jagged self.

Neil has assumed that love was like a liquid pouring into a vessel, and that the longer you loved, the more full the vessel became, until it was entirely full. The truth is that over time, the vessel expands as well. You grow. Your life widens. And you can’t expect your partner’s love alone to fill you. There will always be space for other things. And that space isn’t empty as much as it’s filled by another element. Even though the liquid is easier to see, you have to learn to appreciate the air.

I think this book was excellent. It was written from the POV of past/dead gay people. The narrative used the word ‘we’ a lot. At first I didn’t recognize who it was referring too but figured it out pretty quick. As someone who grew up during this time frame, I could see how each story related and how it would have been quite different then as opposed to now. I remember the fear then, the blame that was placed and the hate that was spewed wantonly through my peers and the news. Mostly I remember being scared and not knowing what I was afraid of.

This book goes through many different specific gay encounters including some very intense self introspection. My favorite was the pink haired boy and the blue haired boy. I could totally see how that encounter would have played out in the early 80’s. I was afraid for them. The two boys kissing being the main encounter that pulls most of their stories together. Its not really a story with a plot line and climax. Its more of a then and now kind of perspective. I was quite enthralled throughout and will be looking for more books by this author in the future.

It’s one of the most challenged books in 2015, making it a perfect read for banned books week. I know its already passed but I try to read at least one during that week.
