I couldn't register the book online but I emailed Kaplan and they helped me out. The problem is that I have acces to that account only for a year. Which isn't fair really, no one tells you that before. You pay for it so the account shouldn't "expire". However,the book is very good and the studying plan makes it so much easier.

First did a blind test(they had me take an initial test to see where I was) and had scored a 68. This is out of 99.
They scheduled me to head to MEPS 3-4 weeks later and figured out what the MOS I wanted, required for scoring so I studied those courses.
Took the test and called up my recruiter to find out what my score was and ended up getting an 84.

I tried studying at least a chapter a night, but there were a few times I was too tired from work, but also took my book with me to read during lunch break for about 40 minutes.

The score I needed to get, which was a combined total between the subjects was a 100 out of 150. I got 123.

The book definitely helps in covering everything, but if you know your MOS score goal, try to focus on those subjects.
I would've undoubtedly gotten a higher score if I'd have read the others, as skipped what I considered not high in my priority.

This book is great for learning the ASVAB

This book is great for learning the ASVAB!!!!

What I found most helpful was the flashcards that were included. I would push for even more flash cards in upcoming versions. They really are great questions on them as well. First I would read the section (which is covered in great detail) and then use the flash cards to reinforce.

Some to add might be more on nutrition. Maybe have a flash card for each type of vitamin or mineral. As well as the different types of rocks and other areas that may take readers a while to grasp and retain the knowledge. They might read it once and understand it at the time, but it doesn't really become a fact until they see it time and time again. That's where the flashcards value comes in. It re-enforces the text.

You might even make so many of them that you can include the ones you want for sure in the book, and then have it as maybe an add-on if they want all of your flash cards. I find them to be a very good method to retain knowledge. I used to actually read college level books and make my own flash cards as I was reading the book. I think flash cards are a great way to learn.

The book itself is awesome! Every question has a detailed answer. There are tons of practice tests. I plan on taking one everyday and thoroughly going through each question and reading their answer.

Have yet to check out the videos but I will get around to them. I have been using Youtube tutorials for getting this information via video but I am sure the videos are worth checking out.

About the Author
Winona LaDuke lives on the White Earth reservation in Minnesota and is an enrolled member of the Mississippi Band of Anishinaabeg. She is the Project Director of the Honor the Earth Fund and Campaign Director for the White Earth Land Recovery Project. In 1994, LaDuke was named by Time as one of America's 50 most promising leaders under 40 years of age. In the 1996 presidential campaign, she served as Ralph Nader's running mate in the Green Party. In 1997, with the Indigo Girls, she was named a Ms. Woman of the Year. LaDuke received the Reebok Human Rights Award in 1998.

Seminoles at the Heart of the Everglades Where the natural world ends and the human world begins, there you will find the Seminoles. There is no distinction between the two worlds-The Creator's Law governs all. It has always been like that, since the beginning. "The Creator made our people and gave us the laws on how we're supposed to conduct ourselves," explains Danny Billie, spokesperson for the Independent Traditional Seminole Nation, which consists of about 300 people in the midst of the Florida Everglades. He is trying to keep that law: the Creator's Law, the Breathmaker's Law. The Independent Traditional Seminole Nation of Florida steadfastly keeps their traditions-language, culture, housing, ceremony, and way of life-against the forces of colonialism, assimilation, globalization and all that eats cultures. Their presence in the Native community provides a yardstick against which to measure your own values, your own way of life, and your choices. That is the lesson they will teach without speaking. And that is a great gift. In the center of their Chickee (traditional house) they keep a fire-always, it seems. It is the fire of culture, the fire of life. I am not so different. I tend my fire, that one in the woodstove, which keeps my northern house warm. Watch the fire, nurture it, and it will feed your soul and warm your body. Leave the fire, and it may get away from you. That lesson is worth remembering. The Panther Clan of the Seminole Nation consider the Florida panther their closest animal relative. There are only about fifty of these panthers left. Both the panther and the Seminole have fought for their land and they intend to remain there. But industrialization and the drive for profit are squeezing the lifeblood out of the Everglades, and it's not possible for the Seminole and panther alone to change that. Two hundred years ago, the Seminoles and the animals had most of the Everglades to themselves. Blooming flowers of every shape and color were intertwined with the textured green of shrubs, grasses, and trees. Small hills rose among the great waterways, in whose fertile soils the Seminoles planted small gardens. In their massive dugout canoes, they travelled as far as Cuba and the Bahamas. At home, they prayed for and feasted on fish and animals, and made their shelter from the great cypress swamps and palm trees. From other plants they made their medicines, and each day they gave thanks to the Creator for their way of life. To the Seminole, like other Indigenous people, the way of life is a ceremony in itself, and they acknowledge it historically and today through a language called Hitchiti. The Seminoles, it is said, had once been closely affiliated with the Creeks. Their name, Seminoles, came from a Creek word meaning "runaway," or "wild," or alternatively, "people of the distant fire." When they decided to keep to themselves, they started an independent, village-based system of governance. But their land was coveted. First by the Spaniards, who imagined a Fountain of Youth amidst the sea of grass, pink flamingos, blue herons, and brilliantly colored birds, and then by the Americans, who, as time would tell, coveted all.

A brief, poignant summary of indigenous struggles everywhere.

I've read many thousands of books and this is my all-time favorite. I like to keep a couple of extra copies around to give to friends. Wherever there are remnants of indigenous peoples, big corporations and governments are using violence to try to evict them and steal their resources. Lifestyles that sustained humanity for tens of thousands of years should be allowed to survive the greed and expediency of "civilization." There's nothing civilized about genocide for profit. It's barbaric and needs to be understood as such.

Very educational

Very detailed version of how the white man has treated the indigenous natives not only in the US, but elsewhere. LaDuke's books have a special significance to me as for the past 4 years I went through the White Earth Reservation on my way to a friend's house in northern MN. I wanted to visit White Earth, but never had the time. I have the same comments about "The Winona LaDuke Reader"

I've sent several emails to the White Earth Reservation, and have ordered some of their merchandise, but haven't received a reply.

Environmentalism is about People, too.

I think in light of other reviews it makes some sense to underscore that this book is not about environmentalism in the traditional sense, but about the connection between the environment and people. LaDuke's great contribution to the environmental debate is her all-too-rare understanding that there is a connection between the earth and the people that live on it. Not in some hocus-pocus new age way, but a real, scientific connection between people (particulary Native people, because of their lifestyle) and polution. My lone criticism is the charicaturization of corporations in this book. GM does pollute, but consumers are also to blame. Nevertheless, LaDuke is undoubtedly correct in connecting the dots between industrialization, militarism and environmental pollution and she does so in a way that few authors have ever done. A fantastic book that stands in stark contrast to Earth in the Balance as a real manifesto for true environmentalists.

Below average GRE guide

I'm a long-time GRE tutor, and I review GRE books to help self-studiers with their prep. Kaplan's latest version of their GRE prep guide, like its previous versions, is a basic primer for the test, but not what I'd recommend. I think it is inferior to its competition in several important ways.

1. First, this book is a one-size-fits-all book. But kind of like a one-size-fits all hat, it's not going to work as well for people who are below or above average. If you're starting from a high or low point, this may not work well for you: high scorers need more depth; lower scorers need more technique options.

2. Practice question realism is poor, especially for verbal questions. It's so important to practice with questions that capture the nuances and complexities of the real GRE. Kaplan, like most companies, doesn't duplicate these nuances well. In general, these questions are simpler and easier than real questions. So even if this book included access to a million Kaplan computer tests, I would avoid it.

3. The book does not adequately cover all the concepts the GRE will present. I am surprised to see there is still no treatment of logic or "critical reasoning" verbal questions, and that not all math concepts are covered. Again, bad for you if you want a competitive score.

4. The level of depth for math concepts will, in my opinion, not get people to competency in many cases, let alone mastery.

5. The techniques offered for math are fine, but verbal techniques are fairly fluffy - they may work on Kaplan-written questions, but I don't think for many they'll work well on more difficult ETS GRE questions.

The thing that gets me worked up about this book is not that it's mediocre. It's that it's marketed as the best, most comprehensive GRE prep option. I guess it sells more books to say your book is an easy one-stop solution than to tell people that you may need multiple books and that hard work is required. Also, Kaplan books have a funny way of garnering tons of 5-star "reviews", and as a result, millions of people buy them. Whatever prep materials you choose, I suggest researching them in detail.

Great Value for Money

I have GRE score of 323 and I am one of the founding members of the GRE Prep Club online community. Here is what I think about this book:
~~~ PROS~~~
1. Great Value for Money: The combined package, i.e. the book + CD + Online Materials, form a very exhaustive library of GRE Questions created and Compiled by Kaplan.
2. Its greatest merit lies in its Chapters on AWA Sections. The topics and responses are discussed in great detail. There is an immaculate Foundation and Content review chapter under the AWA section as well, which is probably the best feature of this product. It also discusses the pacing strategy (writing the essay within 30 min) and nuances of Scoring.
3. The Foundation and Content Review Chapters under both, Quant and Verbal sections are very detailed and beginner friendly. The theoretical coverage on the topics is fairly detailed.
4. The answers to the practice questions, in the book, are very detailed and insightful.
5. Practice test are of paramount importance for test prep. The six tests equip the user to perform SWOT analysis and monitor progress from time to time. The test analysis report is a lifesaver!

~~~ CONS ~~~
1. Difficulty level of questions, specifically in the Quantitative section, could have been better. The practice test set questions are not at par with the Questions by ETS.
2. The section named: “Kaplan Method of Problem solving” has a much better alternative that can be found in the book by ETS. Since ETS books contain actual GRE questions hence it is much more effective to emulate problem solving strategies presented in the Book by ETS.
3. The questions on the Tests by Kaplan seem to lack the quality that we have come to Expect from ETS and Manhattan.
Overall it is a well-balanced book and good value for money. However, it is not sufficient by itself, if the user wants to score more than 315 points. If you are looking to score higher on the GRE you must consider other books. It is highly advisable that you look into ETS GRE as they have actual GRE Questions.

~ What are some of the other study options that I have?
Some students, in the past, have bypassed Kaplan completely and started more specialized books such as the ETS or Manhattan GRE. For example, Manhattan GRE Set of eight strategy guides come with 8 books that target specific math and verbal areas. You would have a much better shot at scoring 315+ using this (not guaranteed), however they require 2-3 months to complete. ETS has a similar collection of 3 books (general + quantitative + verbal). They also have four tests on CD rom enclosed along with the package.

~ What is a good study plan using Kaplan Premier?
Since it is a good book for beginner’s, I would recommend that you could start with Kaplan and finish it within a month, then evaluate which are your areas of strength/ weakness. Based on your analysis you can invest in a book by Manhattan/ ETS to bolster your weaknesses.

~ Will this get me to 315+?
This book alone, probably, won’t get you to 315+ score but for people out of college it would refresh the math and verbal fundamentals. You should seriously consider investing in ETS as they provide you with questions that have appeared in GRE before.

~ How do I get to 315+ with this book?
• You can review your concepts using this book and take a Mock test to perform SWAT analysis.
• Based on your SWAT you can invest in a book that targets your weakness. (see the other books I should know about Section below)
• Retake a Mock test and see the changes in your results.
• If you have a bit more time you can consider investing it in a Book series like the ETS or Manhattan. This will, most likely, take your score to a higher level but it would also cost more in terms of time and money.

Other Books I should know about?
Make sure you have the Official Guides (at least one of them). The Manhattan GRE series are pretty good as well but require a lot more time to go through them.

Makes you enter the exam like you'll be in the 90 percentile but you won't

I have gotten the last 3 versions of the KAPLAN book from a friend to take the exam. In the combined 10 quantitative exams that I had in these books I was getting 18 or 19 out of 20 on every exam. I entered the GRE thinking I was golden & boy was I wrong. The easiest question on the actual math GRE is harder than the hardest question in any of those GRE books. The Kaplan book sounds great but if you use this you will not be leaving the exam so happy because you spent a month taking multiple exams where you are at worst getting 3 wrong out of 20 questions, you get to the exam and it seems like jibberish compared to what KAPLAN had you studying.

It will hold an important place in your library and in your personal body of knowledge. If you're a tango DJ, or want to be one, there's no question--you have to have this book. A Treasure

I am generally a pretty critical reader, and it's almost embarrassing to write such a glowing review, but I can say without reservation that this book is a treasure. (And no, I am not a friend of the family. I haven't even watched him on The Daily Show, although I'll probably start to watch now.) Trevor Noah is a superb storyteller, and this memoir is his eloquent and touching account of growing up as the mixed race child of a single mother, living in poverty in deeply racist and sexist South Africa. He provides an inside look at a life very different from what almost anyone has experienced (due to his unusual ethnicity and upbringing), yet it is easy to relate to him and fascinating to read his stories. The book reads like a novel, but it is so much more affecting because it is true. Reminiscent of The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, it is a superbly written story of a perceptive and resilient child thriving in very difficult circumstances, and it beautifully captures these circumstances seen through the eyes of a child.

Trevor's mother taught him to use humor to help cope with life, and he learned that lesson well. Despite having good reasons for feeling self-pity and resentment, Trevor had a knack for finding the humor in even the most difficult circumstances. Not forced, jokey humor, but just a low-key appreciation for the weirdness of life. As I turned the last page, I smiled at the ending, which was perfect, but I also felt sad that the story ended. I want to know what happened next. I hope he will write a sequel.

Comedy out of Tragedy

My decision to request Born a Crime has nothing to do with star power or fandom. I have to admit I have never seen Trevor Noah on the Daily Show. I requested this book when I learned it was about Trevor Noah's childhood in Apartheid South Africa.

I started reading my ebook galley as soon as I was approved.

I have to love a guy who finds comedy in tragedy and who gleefully spins yarns about experiences that would keep most of us in therapy for a lifetime. There is a genius in comedy that allows us to encounter devastating truths through the protective lens of laughter.

The heroine of the book is Noah's mother, a feisty lady with a solid rock faith, a gal who snubs her nose at things that don't make sense. She makes mistakes, but always out of love. She takes huge risks but somehow Jesus is always there to catch her mid-fall.

Noah was "naughty as s***" and a challenge to raise, but never hateful or mean. He learned to navigate Apartheid society's complex system that divided people in to three groups: black, white, and colored. How one was categorized was senseless. Japanese were put into the 'white' slot but Chinese into the 'colored'.

"The genius of Apartheid was convincing people who were the overwhelming majority to turn on each other. Apart hate, is what is was."

Noah was 'colored' with a 'black' Xhosa African mother and a 'white' Swiss father, his very existence implicating his parent's crime. Had the police discovered them, his parents would be sent to jail and Noah sent to an orphanage. He spent much of his life hidden away, indoors. His parents could not be seen together with him, and his mother had to even pretend he was not her child.

Noah was "colored by complexion but not by culture." He spoke multiple languages, Xhosa and Zulu and Afrikaans, and English, could fit into most groups, but felt affiliated to black culture.

The book is a series of episodic tales, thoughtfully constructed, saving the climax of his family history until the end of the book, after we have come to know and understand them.

"I saw the futility of violence, the cycle that just repeats itself, the damage that's inflicted on people that they in turn inflict on others. I saw, more than anything, that relationships are not sustained by violence, but by love."

The book is funny but is more than a diversive read, it enlarges our understanding of the world. Noah offers an understanding of South African history, colonialism, and Apartheid that is engaging and relevant. He shares the important things he learned and offers them to us. We should listen. We should learn.

A Story of Resilience

It's hard to imagine a childhood like Trevor Noah 's, although there are probably many others who have similar stories. It is a credit to this man for surviving this impossible beginning, but the truest measure of his character is in his realization that the hero of the story was really his mother. Noah 's book will inspire others and will serve as a true witness to the powers of resilience. One can only wish that all children who are dealing with such trauma can find strength and support through examples such as Noah 's.

Excellent Star Wars Role-playing Game

My first exposure to Star Wars role-playing was West End Games' (WEG's) Star Wars (SW) D6 role-playing game.

This is the first RPG to come along since that truly captures the SW feel.

First, the book comes in at a whopping 448 pages! The book is lavishly illustrated and sewn and glued so that this volume will last you through years of rough treatment.

The folks at Fantasy Flight Games (FFG) are known for high quality gaming products that are produced by role-players for role-players. You can see that this game was an act of reverence for the SW setting.

As you open the front cover, you will find a smallish pamphlet that says "read this first." It lays out the basics of play for the complete novice. The tome is laid out in a completely logical flow beginning with how to play the game and how to generate characters. FFG has a unique approach to modeling action success and opposed activities that hinge on Skills and Talents. Skills are just as they sound. These are activities that the player character has been trained and educated in. Talents on the other hand are aspects or character chrome that give bonuses under certain circumstances, but more than just a mechanic, Talents tend to define a character. For example, the character may have the Talent "command" that indicates that the character has a knack for leadership. The "hunter" talent gives the character in any situation where a skill associated with hunting is used.

The main mechanic in FFG's SW RPG is rolling a dice pool and determining if there are more success rolls than failure rolls. The dice pool is composed of specialized dice. (You can either buys these separately or get them as part of "the Edge of the Empires Beginner's Game Star Wars: Edge of the Empire Beginner Game.")

Characters have six abilities: brawn, agility, intellect, cunning, willpower, and presence. The raw score of these determine how many ability dice are used as a base for the roll. For example, if Glognar has a cunning of "3" and wanted to use an untrained skill, say deception, relating to cunning then Glognar would roll "3" ability dice. If the skill is trained then the player can substitute one proficiency die (with correspondingly better results) per skill level for an ability die. Using the same example, say Glognar had two levels of skill in deception, he could substitute two proficiency dice for two of the ability dice. He would roll two proficiency dice and one ability die.

There are negative dice too. Nearly every dice pool will include at least one difficulty die. The number of difficulty die is directly related to how challenging the attempted action is. For example, shooting a blaster at longer and longer ranges adds more and more difficulty dice. Under some circumstances, difficulty dice are swapped with challenge dice in the same way that ability dice are substituted with proficiency dice. For example, if the player is trying to outwit an opponent who is trained in streetwise, the gamemaster would substitute challenge dice for the difficulty dice for every level of streetwise.

Finally, there are situational dice, boost and setback. If there circumstances are particularly favorable, the gamemaster might rule that a boost die should be added to the pool. If things are more challenging, e.g., it is dark, then the gamemaster might add a setback die to the pool. Specific skills and circumstances that add die to the pool are laid out in detail in the book.

The more advanced dice add new potential results from the dice pool. There are advantage and threat results. These cancel one another the same way that success and failure rolls do. Uncancelled advantage results mean that the player has experienced the opportunity for a positive consequence or side effect. Uncancelled threat results have the opposite effect. So, even though a character may succeed, there may be some negative consequence. Some skills have special results when a certain number of special results are rolled. The triumph and despair symbols are the ultimate ends of the die rolling spectrum. They are rarer than the other results and have a larger impact.

One of the neat aspects of the dice pool is that the players and gamemaster know why a character succeeded as well as whether the action was successful. If the proficiency dice had all of the successes for a roll then the group could say that it was the character's training that saved the day. If the setback die had the one extra, uncancelled failure then the group might surmise that it was the dark conditions that prevented the action from being successful. You see the possibilities.

I loved the WEG D6 SW game, but one of the limitations of the WEG D6 edition was that there was a limit to how far a character could advance before almost any action became trivial.

It would take a long time to reach such a limit in this current, FFG version.

I could go on writing for a long time given the size of the material, but one more example suffices to show the depth of the game. Adversaries are divided into three categories, minions, rivals, and nemeses. Minions are individually easy to defeat, but they add some of their abilities together, making large numbers of minions quite formidable. Rivals are the next level up, and they can be individually challenging, but typically are less capable than the average player character. Finally, nemeses are just as capable or even more capable than most player characters. In fact, there are some talents that only nemeses can have.

The FFG team has produced a wonderful new addition to the RPG library. I highly recommend this product. My group will be playing this one for years.

something awesome happens: the game goes beyond traditional RPG narratives

Overview:

The FFG Star Wars RPG distinguishes itself from others by keeping the game off the table, and in the story between friends. It is a game where you're focusing less on measurements, maps, and pieces, and more on the actual narrative. In my opinion, this makes it one of the strongest RPGs of all time.

Dice:

So, the unique thing about the FFG SW is the dice mechanic, which actually accounts for other narrative moments beyond success or failure. What I mean is, you could succeed at a check, but also generate a negative outcome at the same time; even though that negative 'thing' doesn't apply to what you did, it can still have dramatic effects on the story.

So, let me give you an example: Joe the Slicer is trying to open a door. He could fail at the check for the door, but accidentally generate advantage, which would kick another narrative bonus in...so the door stays locked, but Joe accidentally opens a nearby locker that has some medkits in it.

It's a mechanic that creates incredible twists and turns throughout the story, and one I wish they would adapt into many other games!

Characters:

This is also the other incredible part of the game; FFG doesn't just let you build "yourself as a smuggler". In the character creation process, you actually have to give your character all kinds of complex, negative baggage. They force layers onto your character, so it's not just "you in armor"; you're actually motivated (and rewarded) by playing someone with depth.

Conclusion:

When these different game mechanics work together, something awesome happens: the game goes beyond traditional RPG narratives. The character depth and dice rolls lift stories to a whole new level, creating exciting, more natural interactions. It's a game I highly recommend!

great with minor drawbacks that I overexplain

This is a great rulebook, with a couple of drawbacks. I am new to GMing RPGs with a group that is new to playing them - everything has gone smoothly up to this point, playing a beginner game and fudging our way around character creation with some online cheat sheets and my remembrance of the process instead of with the rulebook. While that is not directly pertaining to the book - it is an opinion on the rule-set and its accessibility so it may be valuable. I also play as a character with my local gaming store.

My shipper took a while to ship, but that seems reasonable as it is a heavy book and it was well protected, in perfect condition on arrival. Now that I have the rulebook, I have started drafting up my first proper adventure to run with them, and it has been excellent.

The artwork is gorgeous, and the book is filled with it. Compared to the insane amount of art found in the book, the dry, bland "rules only" pages are few and far between. Even most of the more boring pages will have diagrams of weapons or gear being described, or something along those lines. The rules regarding how they work when in play are very streamlined. Even things that may feel more fiddly when you initially introduce them, are quickly seen to be contributing to the "Star Wars" feel. I love Star Wars, I love socializing, I love storytelling - basically this book was the perfect way for me to get into the RPG scene. It's no surprise I like it, and I can only expound on that I do in so many ways.

So, I will turn to list some bad things. While I may list several or more than I list positive things, that's only because they are easier to quantify than positives and do not reflect the overall quality. The first major issue is the dice. I love the way the dice system works, but they simply overcharge for them. I managed to get mine in a beginner copy, and a set from Amazon for around $8. However, you *will* eventually need to roll more dice than one set can give you, and at MSRP will dump $30 into two sets to be capable of them. There's a chance you go beyond even that many. Try and get them for cheap, try and have everyone pitch in a set, or whatever you can. This isn't a "rulebook" critique, but as it is so crucial it's important to state here.

As for the rulebook proper, dice requirements out of the way, it is generally well written and my criticisms come down to personal preference. Many times, the specific rules required to utilize something mechanically in game (e.g. how a certain weapon works, what benefits a certain armor gives you, etc.) are hidden in a more narrative and thematic explanation. While the ability to reference a thematic explanation is great for keeping everything consistent, it can be difficult to have to search for a rule in a pinch and then have to look through paragraphs of pure fluff to get to it. My only other complaint is that it very occasionally does not provide enough examples of a thing. It gives around three effects you can apply for advantage, and then says "or anything else that makes sense". While that's all fine, it can be difficult to think on your feet well enough to do that, and "take a strain for [blah scene related reason why]" is too easy to fall back on. It could have listed just a few more, and then at least you would have twice as many fall back options.

But overall, great.
