Good for content review, not so good for NCLEX study.

Not a bad resource for pharmacology class, but not a good resource for NCLEX study. There seems to be some inconsistency with the principles in the rationales throughout the book. For example, for NCLEX, you're not supposed to add anything to the question stem that isn't there, and you're not supposed to read into an answer to the extent that you need to start making up a story for why the answer choice could make sense. Yet there are questions in the book where selecting the "right answer" would require you to infer something that is NOT in the question stem, or make up a story for the answer to work.

E.g. There is a question about an obese person with tachycardia, restlessness, etc., shows up in the ER, and the right answer is that the nurse asks the client how long he's been taking appetite suppressants. Well, you could ask the client IF he is taking them, but there's no clear indication anywhere in the stem that he is; more to the point there are other answers that make sense, so why would you necessarily infer that the patient's problem is abuse of appetite suppressants when you haven't ruled out other possibilities that are just as likely (e.g. use of amphetamines)... The answer fits, but you have to add information to the stem that isn't there, and you could just as easily add information for other answer choices that makes sense... In short, the question strays from the very principles of problem solving that the NCLEX is designed to test, such as don't add things to the stem that aren't there, and don't make up a story for why an answer could work.

On the other hand, the content review of this book is very helpful. My complaint is that the questions that undermine NCLEX taking principles might just add more confusion and frustration to somebody who is trying to master those principles (and pass the NCLEX).

This information in this book will help some, but not all of it. The publish date is 2014 and some of the information is outdated which leads to wrong answer and false positives. If you are using this to help study for an exam then make your first choice for study materials to be your text book. Don't use this exclusively as some of the answer and rationale may be wrong now.

Overall a cute little read.

Full figured women meets rugged cowboy on a dude ranch. This story involved two characters Danielle and Owen who are total opposites. They say opposites attract and they were not kidding with this one.

Danielle was sent to her parents dude ranch to learn some responsibility and grow up. Let's just say she got more than she bargained for with Owen, her father foreman son. This story had spanking, crying, temper tantrums', and who lot more that will make you either laugh or want to hit the female character yourself.

Segal, a professor of Jewish studies at Barnard College, spent 10 years on this project, but the erudition he displays is undoubtedly the result of a lifetime of scholarship. Although Segal maintains that answers to that question lie "beyond confirmation or disconfirmation in the scientific sense," he offers a comprehensive overview of how the afterlife is understood in the three main Western religions. He thoroughly examines early influences from Egypt, Mesopotamia, Canaan, Iran and Greece, then analyzes Jewish views as expressed in the first and second temple periods, the book of Daniel, the Dead Sea scrolls and writings from and about New Testament times, the early rabbis, mysticism and fundamentalism. A Weighty Tome

Alan F. Segal's book "Life After Death" is my first read of his work, and certainly the most massive book I have read in some time. Considering the sheer scope of the topic Segal has attempted to cover, the size of the book should come as no surprise. However, the physical weight is where the "weightiness" ends.

Now, before you freak out about over 700 pages of text on life after death, it should be emphasised that Segal writes in a very accessible and easy going manner. A few of the words he uses require a dictionary, (at least, I needed one), but the incidence of this was not a burden. Segal keeps you moving and presents a great level of quotation from ancient sources to highlight his points. His manner and style of presentation and discussion are absolutely fantastic.

Segal presents the beliefs of different cultures from a more social viewpoint than anything, and deals with how these beliefs can illustrate what the people thought of about themselves and the world about them. What you end up with is a very interesting discussion not just on life after death, but also some of the political, cultural and social concerns that went into them. This makes for a very well-rounded discussion.

Segal takes you through various cultures and civilisations, and throughout he inter-connects various ideas between them to show how they illustrate each other by contrast or simularity. These cultures include chapters on Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia and Canaan, Israelite, (broken into various chapters), and much more, including detailed chapters on Christian views and their development through the centuries.

This book is really a great overview of the topic, and it is relatively easy to find from Segal's referencing further material for more specific reading. Segal has done exceptionally well to squeeze such a vast topic into about 750 well-written and dynamic pages.

This book gets a big "thumbs-up" from me. I will certainly be reading more of Segal's work in the future.

For many Christians, recitation of the Apostles' Creed is a rote part of Sunday morning's liturgy. And most worshipers more than likely routinely repeat phrases they've repeated Sunday after Sunday without giving much or any thought to what they're saying. "Resurrection of the dead" I suspect is one of those affirmations that roll politely off the tongue while conveniently by-passing the gray matter. My hunch is that people assume they're making a belief statement about the resurrection of Jesus not their own physical, corporeal resurrection.

Segal's book picks up where Oscar Cullman left off and goes into exhaustive and fascinating detail as to how the idea of an afterlife came to be in the Western world. Cullman's little book (Immortality of the Soul or Resurrection of the Dead) is must reading. In less than a hundred pages, Cullman details the differences between the pagan notion of an immortal soul and the Jewish/Christian belief in the resurrection of the dead--real bodies being raised in the last days. Life After Death begins with those same pagans and then offers an extremely well-documented history of various religion's views of the afterlife. This is not an afternoon read.

What I found most fascinating about Segal's book was the way he demonstrated the connection between the different philosophical ideas and the religious belief system(s) that inherited or appropriated its predecessor. One must make a leap of faith at times with his connections (no proof can be made that an early Christian said, "Plato's Phaedra makes sense to me!"), but the bridges he makes are convincing and cited with care. Gnosticism is but one compelling example of such a connection.

Apart from the historical aspect, one may ask, "So what? What difference does it make?" American Christians' bias against Muslims viz. martyrdom is one case in point. It is assumed (by our prejudice) that martyrs do what they do to inherit afterlife in Paradise. And that very well may be the case, and Segal does a fine job of looking at the nuances of Islamic interpretation of holy text. But recall Marx blasted Christianity as the opiate of the masses and Woody Guthrie criticized Christians for desiring the "pie in the sky by and by" because these beliefs can lead to self-righteousness, ignoring of social issues, and the Christian version of holy war (Crusades, Manifest destiny, Iraq).

Expect to be enlightened and amazed with this book. I cannot recommend it strongly enough for any thoughtful Christian, one who adheres to the dictum that spiritual growth is "faith seeking understanding."

Exhaustive Coverage of Jewish, Christian, Islamic Views

Humans are, so far as we know, the only animal that concerns itself with what happens to us after we die. We don't even like to use the word die, we say passed away, crossed the river Jordan, or other terms. ==A major aspect of western religion is defining life after death. And in this monumental work, the origin and evolution of afterlife thoughts are traced. He begins with the Egyptions, where a life after death theology began to be developed. He thoroughly examines other early cultures such as Mesopotamia, Canaan, Greece, etc.

Finally he gets into the big three of western religions, first he covers Jewish views (Dr. Segal is a professor of Jewish studies at Columbia). Christian views come largely from Paul (Dr. Segal wrote a definitive book on Paul.) and the Gospels. For Islam, of course the Qur'an and some of the more modern writings are used.

In spite of the books large size (about 730 pages of text plus 150 pages of notes) it is fascinating enough and well written enough that it is relatively easy reading.

About the Author
O. C. Ferrell (Ph.D., Louisiana State University) is University Distinguished Professor of Business Ethics at Belmont University. He most recently served nine years as University Distinguished Professor of Marketing and Creative Enterprise Scholar at the University of New Mexico. His academic research focuses on ethical decision-making, stakeholder relationships and social responsibility. He is a leading author in marketing ethics and stakeholder orientation to achieve marketing performance in organizations. Dr. Ferrell is past president of the Academic Council of the American Marketing Association and chaired the American Marketing Association Ethics Committee twice. Under his leadership, the committee developed the AMA Code of Ethics and the AMA Code of Ethics for Marketing on the Internet. He is Vice President of Publications for the Academy of Marketing Science. He has received the Cutco Vector Distinguished Marketing Educator Award from the Academy of Marketing Science. Dr. Ferrell is the co-author of 20 books and more than 100 articles. His articles have been published in the Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Business Research, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, and The Academy of Management Executive, as well as other journals. His MARKETING: CONCEPTS AND STRATEGY TEXT, co-authored with Dr. William Pride, is one of the most widely adopted principles of marketing text in the world. He was invited by FEDERASUL, a prestigious business organization in Brazil, to discuss business ethics on a panel that included one of Brazil's Supreme Court Justices as well as a former ambassador. In 2006?2007, Professor Fraedrich was awarded the Bill Daniels Distinguished Professor of Business Ethics at the University of Wyoming, College of Business. Recently, Professor Fraedrich was invited to teach for the Department of the Army at the General Officer level concerning "The Consequences of Power." I highly recommend this book

Very on point, very thorough. This book is written by a scholar who set out to prove that the Christian Faith was wrong, and ended up becoming a Christian himself, so it is very convincing. It covers a lot of philosophy and logic, so just forgive yourself if you do not understand every last word. I often have to read paragraphs several times and look up certain words on Google to be able to follow it all. But it is the ultimate book on how to defend the Christian Faith, so I just read a little bit of it as a compliment every time I read the Bible. I figure it will help my Christian growth as long as it is part of my Bible study and not used instead of Bible study. I highly recommend this book.

Atheist, Agnostic, Carnal, or Spirit-Filled, waivering faith, a Must for your Library

This will be my fourth purchase of THE NEW EVIDENCE THAT DEMANDS A VERDICT. My first purchase was for Evidence that Demands a Verdict, period. My second purchase, the one I currently use, was the publications combined and sold under the name, "The New" Evidence that Demands a Verdict. The third I purchased as a memorial for a church library in memory of a good friend who is with the Lord. And, today, I am making my fourth purchase for a good friend battling cancer, who is far more Spirit-Filled than I ever will be. Every home should have a well-worn, used copy of God's word, which we typically refer to as the Bible. While I have a small library of "Bibles," they are of no good unless read. Most of mine are for various translations, a few are for Bible studies, and the remainder for research, study, and ones I can take notes in and highlight. This is not a "stand alone" book. It is meant to be used with your Bible. And, there are parts of this book, that are not easy reading, and requires higher level thinking skills. Regardless of your "reading level," comprehension, or education, Josh McDowell continues to put together in one easy to find source (bound book) the questions, answers, and historical foundation for our Christian Faith. If I was an atheist or agnostic, I would have this book as one of my references to know what I must overcome to continue to deny the Holy Spirit and the historical person, Jesus Christ. Regardless of our religion, whether we attend church or not, our belief in a Supreme Being, the ultimate question for man/woman despite his or her ethnicity, creed, religion is the question: What to do about the person who walked the face of this earth nearly 2000+ years ago? We all make decisions on our life's journey. And, whether consciously or not, the majority of us are faced with "What to do about Jesus?" This book is that and much more. It is a well-documented history of faith and philosophy and one of the best references in my opinion that any person can have in their library when those questions of faith come up.

Six months after the memorial gift to a Presbyterian church library of a large Presbyterian church, my gift to my friend with the acknowledgement of how much he had meant to me in the few years I had known him, had not been acknowledged. Upon contacting the church library, they indicated they had not received the book and therefore had not inventoried it in the church library. Back tracking, Amazon dot Com's records should the book had been shipped and received by the church. What happened to the book?

I never received a proper answer to that question. I have some ideas about the matter. THE NEW EVIDENCE THAT DEMANDS A VERDICT is not heresy and should not cause a schism in any believing individual or denomination. Shortly after my inquiry, the acknowledgements came. I hope the individual or individuals who withheld this wonderful reference from the church library were blessed by their readings by the Holy Spirit, strengthening their faith, in those areas where there are doubts, and if the reader was a none believer, hopefully his or her questions have been answered and that now they are a part of the body of Christ.

Must Have Reference Book

"The New Evidence That Demands a Verdict Fully Updated to Answer the Questions Challenging Christians Today" is an excellent reference book for conservative Christians everywhere. Josh McDowell deals with Christianity based upon historical facts. The citations used cannot be refuted as they are written by secular schollars, all of whom have been reknowned and accepted throughout these past centries. "New Evidence...," also deals with liberal Christian theological issues. He presents the Liberal position with their evidence; then looks at each piece of their evidence with the same positions from a logical, evidentual perspective.
Josh McDowell is a college profesor who started his original work "Evidence That Demands a Verdict" with the purpose of exposing Christianity as a "fraud". However, when he finished his work he found that Christianity was not fraudulant but was a factually based faith. Those facts, and much more, were included in "The New Evidence That Demands a Verdict Fully Updated to Answer The Questions Challenging Christians Today." This is a book that needs to be in the Conservative Christian's library.

During this time, Segovia greatly enriched the guitar repertoire through numerous arrangements and collaborations with major composers via correspondence. It was also an era of happy family life with Paquita. The couple collaborated on two of the most important contemporary guitar concertos and traveled throughout Latin America to perform. Then tragedy struck as the guitarist became entangled with a beautiful Brazilian singer in an affair that ruined his marriage and brought tragic consequences to his family life. In writing his autobiography, Segovia could never face this period. With the help of tenacious research and Paquita's two surviving daughters, Alfredo Escande diligently lifts the veil of secrecy and reveals a magical age of music history framed around the couple's decade together.

A fascinating biography

This is a lovely translation by Charles and Marisa Postlewate of Alfredo Escande's fascinating account of the years Andres Segovia lived in Montevideo with his second wife, the pianist Paquita Madriguera. Escande's limpid and clear prose has been rendered into English with grace and elegance. The challenge for the biographer is to transform the raw materials of letters and reminiscence into a full-blooded portrait of remarkable human beings who lived and loved with passion. In this, Escande and his translators have succeeded brilliantly.

New visibility into the lives of two musical geniuses

This book is excellent, and required reading for every fan of classical guitar. Segovia, himself, could not bring himself to write about his failed marriage to Paquita. Other writers have not had the inclination or the information necessary to write this book. Kudos to Charles Postlewate and his wife for translating this important work into English.

I am a dedicated amateur classical and flamenco guitarist with 57 years experience.
